Pole Position, hands down . It was one of my favorites back in the summer camp at the lake, when I was a child (there was a bar with the arcade nearby) - and still it goes strong in its VIC incarnation. Too bad it ain't speak out loud PREPARE TO QUALIFY
^ Pole Position is also one of my all-time favorites. The VIC version is very good.
I've loved arcade racers since I first played Night Driver in the arcade in the late 70s. I didn't play Road Race (or even know about it) until about 10 years ago. I was stunned at how good a clone it is of Night Driver.
Sega's Turbo was another favorite, so much that it was one of the reasons I got a ColecoVision back in 1983. Deathrace is clearly inspired by Turbo and I like it for the similarities.
I'm having a difficult time picking a favorite in this round
Unfortunately there are no smooth Sprint-like (top-down and lap-based) racing games for VIC. It's a shame as Atari 2600, Philips/Magnavox 2 and ZX81 all have very decent ones.
I rented a Colecovision with Turbo + steering wheel + pedal for a weekend at the same time as VIC was my only computer/console. A few years later, when I also owned a C64, I got Death Race for my VIC (in contrast to many of my buddies I did not completely abandon VIC for C64) and was very enthusiastic over a Turbo-clone for VIC. It did not play nearly as well as Turbo and I sorely missed several stages and the ambulance(!), but I still considered it a very worthwhile addition to my collection.
Playing it now... It actually works rather well as a score-challenge. I certainly would enjoy it if anybody could beat my score
There was also another Death Race for VIC, but it seems to never have made it to the web. It may have been a type-in. It was a top-down solo racer where you simply had to avoid the blocky terrain. It scrolled quickly upwards and was very playable.
I took it as a personal challenge to tackle the Intermediate and Advanced levels of Pole Position.

After spending hours with it, I'm even more impressed with how good Pole Position is on the VIC. I with there was a few more colors on the screen, but the gameplay is very solid.
I'm having a difficult time choosing a favorite in this round. As impressed as I am with Pole Position, I really like Deathrace as well.

The best I've figured is that speed needs to be at least 250 throughout the game with no crashes to get to the first checkpoint, speed 260 to get to the second. I doubt I will beat this because it would require maintaining 270 throughout the game and at that speed I crash all of the time.
