Megaton!

Post by Mayhem »

What happens when you find a guy who needs some help pricing up a bunch of old stock, and happens to have a pile of games that aren't in Gamebase20 currently...!

The two Epyx games are still sealed, and will definitely be sold in the near-ish future. Haven't decided on the rest, I may keep or sell them after I've preserved them! :D

Also got a few C64 titles from him that are needed in Gamebase64...

WOW! These titles make me drool  . Are you planning to preserve also the iconography, i.e. boxes and manuals? The K-tek games look particularly attractive.. any more info on them? I can't read the long text on the box.

Yes, the boxes will be scanned front (and back if there's anything unique about them) as well as transferring the tapes. I may scan the manuals, but most of the games are pretty simple so the instructions are like a few lines long. I've got about 15 games by K-Tek (another label of K-Tel) already in GB20, so this purchase almost doubles the number that will be preserved. Most of the tapes are still shrinked in their cases (!), so they've never been used.

Tokra will just have to convert the Rescue at Rigel cover art into Yes VIC Can! format.

Just to note, CCC and RaR are in GB20 already, I just couldn't pass up getting shrinked copies to sell on heh. There were a couple of C64 titles in the pile purely there to sell on as well. But the rest are for preservation, and then I'll decide what to do with them.

I can't imagine how small the distribution must have been for some game titles.

The startling thing is there are at least 15-20 more titles from both K-Tek and Aim Software there that I haven't got yet. That bloke selling all the empty boxes on eBay currently has a pile of Aim Software and K-Tek boxes not in GB20 either. He apparently had a Vic20 Doughboy box (!) that I missed out on.

Yeah, unreleased Synapse game for the Vic20, under the Showtime label. It did come out for the C64, albeit it's quite rare in solus form, it got packaged with Rainbow Walker mainly.

There were LOTS of Showtime games for the Vic20 advertised, but only Salmon Run, Squeeze and Astro Patrol have been proven to be released. The guy selling the stack of unused boxes had Salmon Run, Squeeze and Doughboy boxes for the Vic20. Could have done with the latter two for my collection, but they got sold right before I contacted him. Evidently some other Vic20 collector was watching like a hawk.

Anyone on here?! :P

Really interesting, Mayhem! I love that undiscovered copies of boxes and games are still being located, and preserved.

I'd say it was released for the Vic20. And the label is called Showcase btw :)
For the C-64 it got it's own release in Europe (Synsoft) only, afaik. In the US it was available on flipside of Rainbow Walker only.

So were they saved to a digital format? Any hope to see their manuals as well? :)

It’s unreleased until someone comes up with a tape heh. There’s more than a few examples for the Atari 2600 with boxes and no game eventually forthcoming. Packaging takes longer and therefore produced earlier.

I never heard about Doughboy until last year when I was talking to my assistant T&F coach during training. I told him that my first computer was a Vic 20 and to my surprise he replied that so was his.

Of course I wanted to know his favourite games and he mentioned a game called Doughboy that his parents had bought in a store in Stockholm. I had no idea what game he was talking about and as I'm from the south of Sweden, I assumed it was a minor game sold only in the north. When google later told me it was a Synapse game I was very intrigued! Unfortunately my assist coach thought his parents had got rid of all his Vic stuff long ago.
