Re: Warning by viznut/pwp

When the VIC accesses unconnected space on the VIC-20 and instead takes its pattern data from the instruction and data stream of the CPU, this is another mechanism at work. There are no known cases this would corrupt the internal RAM, and also the schematics of both mainboard revisions don't indica...

Re: Warning by viznut/pwp

Very nice little demo and great to see another PWP prod! :) The checkerboard/whatever zoomer in the background was done with VIC accessing unconnected space. :P There was some debate on the consistency of that technique years back (even from Viznut himself) across board revisions, right? Did those i...

I'm not really sure how you came up with those numbers, but... Sorry, I should've elaborated. I didn't know if you were updating color or screen or... so I just did 3*512 for writing zp/stack, 4*(968-512) for non stack/screen, and I guess the rest is obvious. Just disregard that nonsense though. :)...

Actually the "penalty" is only 2 LDA/STA, since the $9002 updates are necessary anyways to switch the color-RAM betwenn $9400 and $9600. It's an added bonus that I need to change the line width as well and can do this in one write to $9002. Ohhh, of course. That is the root of most...

Sorry for forcing you to explain all that. I probably should've just gone back and read/re-read the past parts. :P Are you using the column expansion to reveal new characters as a method to get unique colors below red A,B,C without touching their color memory? Must be more to it than that though if ...

Looks like you have time before the $9000/$9002 updates to do 3 extra LDA#/STA's. So this allows you to write ahead the color data for the red A,B,C or the purple D,E,F four lines before it is displayed.
Maybe?

Are you updating $9000 every 4 lines so you have more time to update the contents of $900e/$900f? Hmm, this is a head scratcher. :P This is the first time you've used $9000 for PAL right?

does the Pi have the required timing accuracy to do such a thing? I thought the commodore disk drive timing was super picky, that and the Pi runs linux right? Yeah, it may be possible, but it would not be straightforward. As you said, the timing is very picky for perfect emulation. You don't have t...

Huh. I have a made in Japan Vic-20 as well - same box. Bought it for like $10 on ebay a couple years ago. It doesn't work, but I just planned to use it as a case for a spare motherboard I have...Actually, that's still the plan. :)

The Final Expansion contains an SD2IEC device (functionally equivalent to the uIEC), a 512K memory expansion, and flash memory that can be used for cartridges/JiffyDOS functionality. So if you get a FE3, you do not need a uIEC. Please note that a cartridge-based solution is not the most ideal, thoug...
