> Does the game decompress chunks of code/data as needed??! That would certainly be cool. Unfortunately I wasn't able to make a scheme like that work. Exomizer 2 is excellent, but to get any value from the compression, I needed to give it chunks of nearly 500 bytes. Much less and the compressed bloc...

Hi all. As I had hoped, I managed to squeeze teleports into Fickle. Consequently, I've replaced some of the weaker levels with better ones (most of which use teleports). The new version can be found at: https://sites.google.com/site/malcolmsprojects/home/Fickle.zip Since this is supposed to be the v...

Thank you Kweepa. I'm honoured and actually somewhat surprised: quite a few of the 4k games were very high quality. In particular, The Keep was excellent and I'm delighted to see it recognized with a podium position.

Hi again. I've just uploaded another version to: http://sites.google.com/site/malcolmsprojects/home/Fickle.zip The new version should work on both PAL and NTSC vics. In other respects, it's identical to the previous one. (By the way, if anyone has tried Fickle out on a real Vic-20, I'd love to hear ...

Hi again. I've made a few changes and put a new version up at: http://sites.google.com/site/malcolmsprojects/home/Fickle.zip The new version lets you choose a slower or faster speed at the welcome screen. Toggle the speed using the Restore key. I've also increased the time limit for levels. Here's a...

Yeah. You're not the only one confused by the rules. I'll have to work out a way to make them clearer. Ideally they would reveal themselves in the introductory levels, but it may not be possible. So, Fickle has two states: "Do" (green) and "Don't" (red). The only control you have...

Thanks: I'll experiment with slowing the character down slightly. To be honest, I ran out of time before I had a chance to refine various aspects of the game. I do plan on releasing a more polished version, so any suggestions for improvements are welcome. I certainly plan to add NTSC compatibility, ...

New Game: "Fickle" for unexpanded Vic-20

Hi all. I had to rush to get it done in time, but here's my Vic-20 entry for the 4k minigame competition this year: https://sites.google.com/site/malcolmsprojects/home/Fickle.zip Right now, it's only for unexpanded PAL vics. I'll sort that out sometime soon. http://sites.google.com/site/malcolmsproj...

I was flipping through this month's Retro Gamer Magazine (issue 94) and I noticed The Keep was reviewed its homebrew section. It scored 73% if I remember correctly. Probably deserves even higher, but well done anyway, Kweepa.

Your ZX81 game got my vote! Welcome to the forums.
Thanks, Kweepa. Seems like a fun place.
Ah, good for you then, sounds like a man with a plan.
Well I do have a plan. Whether the game design in my head fits into 4K is another matter... but I'm hopeful!

Thanks for your message, Robert. Very helpful. Starting with unexpanded is a good theory, but in practice, may I suggest going to a more practical place with +8k (or more) memory expansion? I should be honest and say that my interest in the Vic 20 is precisely due to the limitations of the unexpande...

First of all, I assume the second "ld65" at the end is output from ld65? Yep. Sorry about that! To compile quikman, you must use the one that Robert provided (apparently doc/vic20.cfg) Aha! So those values can be set on a per-project basis. Useful to know and tells me why the default cfg ...

ca65 problems

Hi there. It's my intention to start work on a homebrew game for the unexpanded Vic 20. I'm new to the machine and unfortunately I'm having difficulty getting started. I thought a good place to get get up and running would be the unexpanded version of quikman, ie quikman2k8. Unfortunately, I can't g...
