New Game: "Fickle" for unexpanded Vic-20
Hi all.
I had to rush to get it done in time, but here's my Vic-20 entry for the 4k minigame competition this year:

Right now, it's only for unexpanded PAL vics. I'll sort that out sometime soon.
Enjoy,

Very nice, I love it. A bit fast, but I'll get used to it I guess!
That's what I love about older games: original concepts. You can't rely on a dumb repeat of everyone else with slightly different graphics, taking for granted that kids will be blinded by more 3D stuff and more gore and blood splatters.

Thanks: I'll experiment with slowing the character down slightly. To be honest, I ran out of time before I had a chance to refine various aspects of the game.
I do plan on releasing a more polished version, so any suggestions for improvements are welcome.
I certainly plan to add NTSC compatibility, have better sound and to tweak a few of the levels. Slowing the game down slightly is possible too. If I have enough room left, there's one feature I'd really like to add: a teleporter!

Really cool! Thanks!

Yeah. You're not the only one confused by the rules. I'll have to work out a way to make them clearer. Ideally they would reveal themselves in the introductory levels, but it may not be possible.
So, Fickle has two states: "Do" (green) and "Don't" (red). The only control you have (any key except Restore) is to toggle between these states.
When in the "Do" state, passing over a floor tile will have some effect:
* clockwise/anticlockwise tiles turn Fickle left/right
* Fickle picks up the heart, keys, etc
On the other hand, tiles are ignored in the Don't state.
One other point might be worth emphasising: the state only affects floor tiles and not doors or barriers (as occur in later levels).
Hope this helps,
Malcolm

Hi again.
I've made a few changes and put a new version up at:
http://sites.google.com/site/malcolmspr ... Fickle.zip
The new version lets you choose a slower or faster speed at the welcome screen. Toggle the speed using the Restore key.
I've also increased the time limit for levels.
Here's a link to the new version in Matt Dawson's excellent javascript emulator:
http://www.mdawson.net/vic20chrome/vic2 ... neType=pal
(BTW, does anyone know the key binding for Restore in that emulator?)
Enjoy,
Malcolm

Hi again.
I've just uploaded another version to:
http://sites.google.com/site/malcolmspr ... Fickle.zip
The new version should work on both PAL and NTSC vics. In other respects, it's identical to the previous one.
(By the way, if anyone has tried Fickle out on a real Vic-20, I'd love to hear if it works correctly. My own Vic is broken )
