Cheesy Trials
Cheesy Trials is a new game in development, for the Vic with a 16K RAM expansion (at the moment). Based on a Windows game I made many moons ago.
A fast paced game with infinite lives where mistakes or hesitations can be fatal. Learn the rooms to beat them in time.
Plan four levels, each with about 16 rooms. The plan is also to enter in the Winter Game Development 2020 competion ... if I can complete all the levels / rooms in the next 7 days!

First few rooms in the game introduce you to the general controls and are not too challenging. Echo (the mouse) has a couple of abilities to learn that you'll need to use in later rooms.

Re: Cheesy Trials
This looks amazing, can't wait to try it!
Wow, I admire the ambition! I found the competition's lead time to be really challenging, even for a 3.5K game. The only reason I finished is because I mistakenly thought the deadline was this weekend, so I took a day of PTO to finish. The plan is also to enter in the Winter Game Development 2020 competion ... if I can complete all the levels / rooms in the next 7 days!

Re: Cheesy Trials
Yea, the timescales are short. The part taking time are the levels. If necessary I'll rein that in to whatever is realistic. I may have to take a day to just crack through it, working in my spare time is slow going.
Glad someone else is entering the competition, I've not heard from anyone else having a go before now.

Re: Cheesy Trials
That's the one. It's going to have a good Vic 20 showing then
Two great, fun games already then ... I better not let the side down and get mine complete in time. The rooms in the levels get very tough so it might not need as many as I first planned. Very much an organic project, I've made a few adjustments (hopefully) for the better. Seven days remaining!
Just for the audience here, another room (still in the easy level) - this one almost killed me testing it. Had to remove a spike as it was a bit too evil.

Keep going with this one. It looks very promising.
Re: Cheesy Trials
I only found out about this competition from reading this thread. I've been so far from the scene lately. I had a few days to slap together something and just sent it. I hope to finish it up and use it in a game jam or something. All the other entries look too good for me to compete. I'm really excited to play them though!
For some reason my game works on real hardware and VICE but not browser emulators like Matt's: https://www.mdawson.net/vic20chrome/vic ... rwater.prg
And I don't have any time left to fix anything, so I may be disqualified. It makes it to line 60 to change screen color, but doesn't seem to get to line 61 to PRINT to screen. What's going on? Very frustrating.
EDIT: I think I figured it out. The prg doesn't work when the name is "underwater.prg" but works when the name is "under.prg" ... might be a filename length limitation.

Re: Cheesy Trials
Just submitted my entry - 10 minutes to spare! Talk about cutting it close. My first email got rejected due to a configuration issue my end. Sent a second time so hopefully it has gone through.
I will check out your game Jeff. Does it work in Vice? If so, it should work on TheC64.

Re: Cheesy Trials
If it works in VICE, I won't resubmit and cause confusion. I'd also be after the deadline. If it's just broken, then I'll just enjoy being a spectator rather than a consideration.

Re: Cheesy Trials
Yes, well-done! I'm mostly looking forward to the "download" stage of this competition.

Re: Cheesy Trials
Such a relief to get this done in time. And must say a big part is due to Denial, had so much help over the last couple of years to re-learn the Vic 20 internals, and learn an awful lot more than I did back in the day. Also, all the inspiration from a community producing some cracking Vic games.
