Split cost of keyboard repair?

Post by srowe »

Is there anyone in the UK that would be interested in going halves on this

https://www.amazon.co.uk/RUBBER-KEYPAD- ... B002BZK06G

The keyboard in my original VIC is very temperamental, this stuff should to do a good quality repair but seems expensive for just a single system. Given it has a 72 hour life after mixing I think it should be possible to use it and then post it to someone else to use.

How does it work?
Valid rule today as earlier: 1 Byte = 8 Bits
-._/classes instead of masses\_.-

It's a special conductive paint, detailed explanation here

There are cheaper types but I think this one has been recommended on Denial before.

Unless you have the little round pads like the PET keyboard, it will not work.
The rubber part of the VIC/C64 keyboard is a flexible oddly-shaped contact and this coating will just come off.

Pull all the key stems and drop them in a bowl of amonia. Leave for 3-4 days, then rinse them off with alcohol and let dry.
They will work again - it revives the conductive rubber.
Cheap and easy.

Interesting, yes, it is the original PET keyboard.

I've not heard of using ammonia, any link to more detailed instructions?

Very informative, I'll try this before shelling out on the repair kit.

OK, so I finally got around to trying this. I've done two PET keyboards and they've come out like new.

My method was as follows, 48 hours in 3% ammonia, wash with water, 24 hours in IPA, couple of hours air dry.

I had to also clean one PCB with pencil rubber plus IPA, just alcohol alone wasn't enough.
