A mention of the Kim-1 on this forum reminded me of this:

The book "How to build a computer-controlled robot" by Tod Loofbourrow.
My library had this when I was in high school. I didn't have the resources or skill to build the robot at the time, but I enjoyed reading it.
The robot is like the old experimental machines from the 60's and early 70's; a room explorer with bump sensors and a Polaroid range finder for obstacle detection.
It was the mid 1980s when I read it. The KIM-1 was kind of an out of date machine by that time.
I just looked up Tod Loofbourrow. He wrote the book when he was 16. He was more recently served as CEO of a video streaming company, and has lectured at MIT on the subject of entrepreneurship.
1978 book tells how to build KIM-1 based robot.
