I read that the circus keepers in Moscow feed their elephants with vodka, so they will keep warm. It was -34C over there yesterday, and the police had been told to be lenient with homeless people, pointing them to places where they would get fed and a shelter.

But alcohol makes your body loose more temperature, so feeding elephants with alcohol is no good idea... It feels warm, but you really get cold faster.

These are the times when I'm happy to live in middle europe, even if our summers are somewhat less sunny than in other areas, but at least I do not have to fear that my feet freeze to the ground while waiting for the bus...

I've seen TV programs featuring homeless in Russia who drink far worse things than vodka, so if we have any feelings for the elephants, we should at least be content that they serve proper alcohol, in particular as it was reported last week that Russia has a shortage of vodka and expect price increases due to that.

My thermometer, which is known to read a few degrees colder than it is, is at -12C. I just checked the weather forecast, and tomorrow it will not be worse than -10C, maybe -15C in some places. The night to Sunday it will be a bit colder, but nowhere near -25 or -30.

It's -6.2 here now and still snowing... When trying the buttons: Max: 5.4C, Min: -10.6C. But I don't know when I resetted it... I think when it was a little colder last time... some weeks ago I guess...

In the CD player right now: Petra Farewell. Petras great farewell concert after 33 years... I bought it for myself as a Christmas gift.

It's oddly warm in Chicago right now! Close to 50F. Pretty good for the "windy city" in January. Of course, Addis Ababa is around 20C today. 8)

Addis Abeba was +26C and sunny according to one weather service. Niamey (Niger) had sun and +32C. On the other hand, the relatively nearby Bangui (Central African Republic) had rain and +10C. I dunno if this is typical for the climate or a temporal flux.

Or maybe the weather service had wrong information, since other services on the net suggests the weather and temperature was about the same at these two places?
