Gigatron computer

Post by Victragic »

From prolific YouTuber '8-bit guy', an update on the TTL-based Gigatron concept computer..

https://youtu.be/uidtGvsk21M

I suspect the fun in one of these projects may be in the design of it, rather than using it for anything.

What struck me though was how similar the text mode was to double-height Vic characters (as referenced in the review). It looks familiar and welcoming.

Or perhaps, an Atari 2600 with Vic-20 font is closer given the shared graphics function with the processing logic.

At GB150 pounds + shipping to Aus this is probably not for me, anyone considering this one?

Allow me to let you in on a little secret: I developed a crush on the simplicity of the VIC-20 while working on Gigatron's BASIC interpreter last summer. So I attempted to approximate its color scheme.

Now you know...

Good old TTL... 8) When I studied mciroelectronics at university, although this technology was already a bit outdated in those years, almost everything was teached with TTL in mind. I literally fell in love for it: everything was so ingenious but yet so simple and cheap and reliable... At the end of the lessons I felt as I was able to build up a calculator with display, or even a simple home computer from NAND gates if I was given time enough to do it. Lord oh Lord were those lessons useful and interesting!!! Rather than being bored by boring lessons, I woke up every day in wild anticipation of what was going to come next! :D

Well, I never really built a home computer with TTL, but it's soo soo nice to see that someone else took time to do it!

Is there any reason why they wouldn't be able to add an SD card reader for file storage?

I suppose because SD cards are not TTL technology?

Neither are VGA or PS/2 but they're still being used for video and input.

There's a thread on that in the Gigatron forum. There seem to be no obstacles to adding that. The hardware side can be as simple as 3 TTL chips, plus some logic level shifting. The software side will be more work.
