Ray Carlsen releases new power supplies and adapters

Post by RobertBe »

Good news! In his understated way, Ray Carlsen writes:

> I just finished updating my website to include the new C64 mini PS and some adapters that will eliminate
> the Y configuration on new power supplies that run a C64 and C128.

O.K., here are more details, all found at

http://personalpages.tds.net/~rcarlsen/custom%20ps.html

The mini C64 p.s., priced at $55 plus shipping, is rated 5VDC @ 4 amps and 9VAC @ 1 amp. The very custom M-AM/64/128-2D p.s., priced at $140, powers a C64/128/VIC-20CR and disk drives, or with the flip of a switch, an Amiga 500/600/1200. Now on the webpage, the VIC-20E two-prong p.s., priced at $35, outputs 9VAC @ 3 amps. The C64-to-128 p.s. adapter and the C128-to-64 p.s. adapter are $15 each. (Not pictured is his heavy-duty p.s. for the Amiga CD32.) All of these are in addition to his other C64/128/VIC-20CR and Amiga 500/600/1200 power supplies!

At

http://personalpages.tds.net/~rcarlsen/cables.html

there is another addition/improvement. It is the "Deluxe Box" Computer Saver and PS Tester, priced at $50. Not only does it prevent overvoltages from original CBM power supplies, but it also "allows p.s. testing without being connected to a computer."

Aww.. its unfortunate that shipping to Europe is so expensive. Would have loved some of these for my collection.

When I return to Europe in 2020, I can bring some for you.

It's my understanding that for the VIC-20E (two prong early model VIC), the 9V power supply actually isn't dangerous like on the VIC-20CR or C64. There is no 5V rail to fail and over-voltage. The danger in the 2-prong VIC is actually internal (the regulators), from my understanding. Heat/failure. But generally the early VICs are a little more stable.

So, I'm assuming the Ray Carlsen VIC-20E power supplies for $35 are just a nice replacement for the original, rather than a "must have" like his power savers and "safe" power supplies for the VIC-20CR and 64.

Besides, the european PSUs (made in Poland) are not so bad either.

Well, I did make my own 5V psu for the CR model (no 9V ac since I don’t need it), and if you have an old portable PC, PS3 psu or alike (with 5V) you can do the same.

It is a bummer that this pictures on his website don't link to a way to purchase the power supplies. I suppose we have to just send an email to get the ball rolling?

Have you notice how his website hasn't progressed past the 90's? Kinda like mine...

I guess we're both on the scabbed-over edge of technology.

There is now a new, attractive, and well-organized front-end to Ray's website. Go to

http://carlsenelectronics.net

Ray has confirmed that he has lowered the prices on his power supplies, and his shipping costs are generally lower.

With Ray producing many, different Commodore/Amiga power supplies, it's hard to keep up with what's available and what's the pricing for them. You can easily and clearly find them at

http://personalpages.tds.net/~rcarlsen/customps.html

An alternative if the front-end of the site is making you look around too long,
