8250 diskdrive problems.

I am cross-posting this from the C64 board. I am stuck. I have tried cleaning and the the drive looks in good shape. I just don't know what to try next.
Could someone help me with a malfunctioning CBM 8250 disk drive? I have tried the following on 4032 and 8032 PETS.
The drive won't HEADER a disk or perform a DIRECTORY command. When these commands are given, the drive appears to be functioning normally. You can hear the heads moving as though the drive is working.
load "$",8 returns not found.
When I print DS$ I get:
74,drive not ready,00,00
I don't have any blinking lights and the the disk appears to spin and not knock.
I only received the drive yesterday so I am a complete newbie with it. Could the drive heads simply need cleaning? I haven't opened it up yet as I have only spent 25 minutes with it. I am just sitting at work trying to think what the issue may be.
