Welcome to the general discussion about the VIC Game Club. We're going to try to keep the game selection varied and rotating through genres so we keep some variety and appeal to everyone possible. The categories are:
  • Classic Arcade Titles, Ports, and Clones (like VIC Avenger and Radar Rat Race)
  • Classic Home Titles (not originally from arcade like Lode Runner and Scott Adams adventures)
  • Classic Educational Titles
  • Modern Originals (games that are not clearly recognizable ports of other titles, like Jeff's games or Pentagorat)
  • Modern Ports and Clones (games that weren't originally on the VIC but are exciting to see now, like Dropout and Popeye)
Original hardware and emulation are both OK.
Casual competition is allowed but optional. High scores can be posted but are not required for participation.
Participation in a game doesn't have to end when new games are announced.

This thread is about which games to play, when it's time to start a new round, and other suggestions and comments. Discussion about specific games played should be under that forum topic.
  1. Qix Inspired Games – Shark Attack, Slap Dap, and Squeeze
  2. The Count
  3. Typing Games
  4. Modern Dungeon Crawlers
  5. Berzerk MMX / MMX+
  6. Omegas
  7. Game Theories
  8. Pulse
  9. Arcade Racers
  10. Cometfall
  11. Paddle Games
  12. Classic Home Titles

high score competition would be cool. It gives motivation to try harder.

It seems clear we have enough interest to do this.

In February the game selection will be from "Classic VIC Arcade Ports and Clones." Nominations are open :)

I try to participate in Lemon's game competition when I have the time. It works as a really great motivator to give non-favourite-games a serious try, and often you will have to change your opinion about the game. Good games will be even more enjoyable. So, I definitely will try to fit in some VIC-gaming too :)

I'll nominate Shark Attack from Romik Software. A game that's got very little attention over the years and is probably best described as a Qix clone:

I'm in. I think we had a "game of the month" thing, like, a decade ago.

I'm in and Shark Attack is Ok by me :)

I enjoyed it quite a lot back in the days but was never 100% sure I understood how it worked. I had played plenty of Qix but the rules in Shark Attack didn't seem as straightforward, then again, I didn't have the manual. I think the key was to keep moving, otherwise the sharks would cut through your net.

Loved the in-game tune. Those were not so common on the Vic and it made the game seem more like my favorite Arcade Game - Amidar! Is it a well-known English tune or is it an original one? I have never been able to identify it.

Shark Attack was apparently released as Shark Trap by Broderbund in the US

I never knew that. Thanks for sharing. That's my first "must find" VIC collectible in quite a while.

I will gladly play Shark Attack. My only concern is that it is too unique to be considered a clone of Qix. Many (most?) VIC-games borrow ideas from arcade games, so there may not be much left for the non-arcade category :?

But as I said, I will be very happy to play Shark Attack. For a straight arcade game I nominate Dig Dug. Because it's the best looking multicolor game from the eighties and because I have never really played Dig Dug (regardless of platform) seriously for score.
