Atari 800 is so stylish! It wasn't very popular in Italy (Europe?) back then, so I never tried nor seen one live. I'd very like to buy one just to try it. Also, the programs look very blocky and simple, much in the late Seventies' fashion. Would you suggest buying one? I guess I'll scan the internet for prices and devices - don't even know if SD2IEC devices and/or video connectors for modern TV sets exist.

Also, thanks so much for your work with Hebdogiciel for the various platforms.

I'm a fan of the Atari 800 but own a 800XL because I find it more practical.
  • The 800 originally maxed out at 48K after adding memory expansions. It also had an earlier and buggier version of BASIC. Modern internal upgrades for the 800 are available (like "Incognito") that add memory and newer BASIC but require tinkering with chips. The 800XL comes with 64K and the newer basic, making it more compatible with software without modifications.
  • I like the looks of the XL line with their early 80s industrial design. The 800XL is also significantly smaller and lighter than the 800. While the 800 is extremely well-built (even over-built), the 800XL is still more sturdy than its Commodore competition.
  • There are some neat modern storage options like the MyIDE2 that don't work on the older Atari 400/800 computers but work on the later XL and XE series.
I have the MyIDE2 with my Atari 800XL and have no complaints. There are a few things that are incompatible with my setup, but not enough for me to worry about. I can enjoy almost everything ever made for the Atari computers in their day (the late 70s through 80s and early 90s) plus plenty of homebrew and modern games. I enjoy the few things that don't run on my hardware (because they require more than 64K) via emulation on a PC.

Akator, thanks for the thorough explanation. I really don't know anything about the Atari 8 bit world, except for some 2600 games and trivia. I see the xl is far more common in eBay, and acceptably low-priced. I guess it could be my next big turnaround, who knows? :)
BTW, what about video cables? Are there s-video, composite, and/or scart available? TIA, it was my last post, i hijacked this thread enough.

The 800/800XL/1200XL/65XE/130XE all come with a monitor/AV port. I am currently using composite (RCA) cable with the monitor port. The cables are cheap and easy to find on eBay and usually cost about $10 US. (example)

There are S-Video mods available but I've never tried any because I don't have any TVs or monitors with S-video inputs. I recall reading about SCART solutions several years ago but don't remember any details. The Atari 8-Bit Computers forums over at AtariAge might have more of the info you are looking for :)
