You need to mention your ASSY number and REV of the mainboard.

Vicist has posted before and after pics of a s-video mod for the VIC-20cr (ASSY 251040. rev D). Also see here and the WIKI

Some tv's don't handle the vic's composite signal too well.
I tried my vic on 3 different tv's. 2 of them were absolutely horrible pictures but the other 1 was ok.
See if connecting to a different tv makes any difference (if possible).

The picture you are getting on your tv doesn't look that bad compared to many others I have seen. Also, switch your tv to 4:3 aspect ratio instead of widescreen - that may help a little.
Be aware that if you do the s-video mod to your vic, you will need different cables to connect it to your tv.

I would suggest the S-Video mod for any VIC to ensure the best signal is coming out of your machine. Then, if you really want perfect picture on LCD you should probably think about the Framemeister:

Granted, at 300 EUR this is far from cheap - but seems to be the one-and-all-solution to display old computers/game consoles on modern display devices.

Other than that you should at least try to put your LCD in 4:3 mode instead of 16:9, which just looks wrong.

Yes, crappy VGA-converteres are all over the place, I got those myself. Terrible results with old retro-hardware.

How are you getting RGB from your VIC?

You don't, but the device has an S-Video and composite-input as well. I don't own it myself, since it IS very expensive, but from all that I read and reviews on YouTube it's the only real solution if you want quality.
