Up to 128 or 256 characters on the real VIC?

The Wikipedia article at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOS_Technology_VIC states that the VIC can only do 128 characters at a time. Well, the +3K version of Pulse uses 256. Is this a bug in VICE? I seriously hope not...
