VIDEO Problem with VIC-20 NTSC

Post by Sid1968 »

Hello,
i have a problem with my "new" VIC-20 NTSC. I use it in germany with a standard german powersupply. Same that i use with VIC-20 PAL.

OK. This is what i got:
Original VIC-20

Now i changed the electrolytic Capacitors and added the S-Video Mod.
The Board with new electrolytic Capacitors and S-Video Mod.

S-Video MOD works, but the Video error is the same:
Video-Output with new electrolytic Capacitors and S-Video Mod.

Any idea what is wrong with my VIC-20?
Cheers

Interesting. It looks like stripes of the same character are randomly written into screen memory.
Doesn't seem like a video error...?

Looks like a faulty Character Rom to me.

From Ray Carlsen's repair info

UD7 901460-03 ROM CHARACTER
Startup screen characters missing (just blocks or flashing lines where
characters should be) and alphanumerics missing from games. Game carts that
use mostly graphics characters may look normal while running

So just a cold solder joint? That's not too bad a fix then.

I bought this one and another one (That have the SHIFT-LOCK Problem - read in this forum) for together 60 EUR.

The seller told me that both "VIC-20 NTSC made in USA" were never in use! They really look like they are completly new!!!
But the long storage time may result in that problem. My other VIC-20 had problems too, that resulted in a keyboard problem. I could fix that,
but the "SHIFT-LOCK Problem" is not solved at all.
