WIP: Pooyan20

Post by beamrider »

Hi All

Just a heads-up that I'm working on a port of 80's arcade game - Pooyan. One of my favorite games of the period. The Vic never got a halfway decent version IMO.

It's 100% machine code and being written using Robert Hurst's excellent Software Sprite Stack! Graphics were created using CBMPRG. The game is being targeted at a VIC+16K.

Still loads to do (collision is next!). Not sure how long it will take to finish due to the amount of work involved and time availability.

Here's a link to a video of the game as well. [The actual game is smoother than the video suggests - especially on a real Vic]

Looking good :)

It's got an Atarisoft vibe to it in the graphics, if you're not sure what I mean, look at the Vic20 releases it put out back in the day.

This looks VERY nice already. The only Pooyan I know for the VIC-20 was released in March, 1988 in the "Compute Mit"-magazine, but of course this was BASIC for unexpanded VIC-20.

Maybe you can increase the vertical height like Frogger'07 did. 23 lines feel a little cramped for this game. 25 should be safe for NTSC, if you go for PAL 30 work fine. Frogger'07 uses 28 character-lines so you loose the status-bar on NTSC, but it still plays fine. You could also show the score vertically and gather an extra line that way.

The game "Outback" by Paramount Software is also a Pooyan clone.

Exciting! My favorite port was for the obscure Tomy Tutor. I no longer have the machine, but the game is still in my memory. I would suggest taking a look at that interpretation too.

The screenshot and YouTube video look very promising! :D

One small remark though: red and blue are a really low contrasting colour pair. Especially on B/W TVs it might become difficult to tell foxes and tree trunk from background.

Assuming that red is realised as auxiliary colour, you could try orange instead, against black as background colour (leaving both green from border colour, and white from foreground as is).

Greetings,

I watched the video and it looks very promising.

I love the way that wide multicolour graphics look like on the VIC 20.

This looks very impressive, and agree it looks like it could have been put out by Atarisoft. Really looking forward to seeing it completed..

But, can't believe I never heard of Pooyan until now! Better late than never..

Keep going with it, the attention to detail is impressive.
