If the checksum was OK, and the parity bit for that particular byte was OK, then what are the odds the tape dump wasn't good?Mayhem wrote:I wonder if the person who bought the tape might be able to redump it. Or somehow we can fix it and recreate the tape properly heh...

First of all, thanks to all for sharing all these precious informations about Dungeons of Death.
I was wondering if anyone managed to fix the bug when you try to open the door just at the beginning of the game. It could be the case of a glitch given by a not perfect dump or malfunctioning tape?
Thanks

Thanks Mayhem.Mayhem wrote:I checked the BASIC listing, I suspect it's a stupid bug and nothing to do with the transfer. None of the listing appears to be fudged or corrupted, it's just bad programming!
Really weird. The game looks unplayable.
Did you had the chance to test the game on real hardware?

I also think part of the issue is the way the game is set up to be loaded in parts. Not sure if the duplication was wrong, or you need a particular memory configuration, but some of the second load overwrites the first (they are supposed to be merged iirc) and that causes issues as well. It would need some further investigation by someone who knows what they are doing heh.

Had an email from a mate of mine who's found copies of the Vic20 Aardvark games Dungeons of Death, Pyramid and... Quest!
He's going to send them to me for transfer into Gamebase20. He warns the Pyramid tape is very dodgy, so I might have to physically repair the spools first before I can use. Thought a few people here might be pleased to hear the news though
He says Dungeons of Death comes on two tapes: one tape for player creation, and one tape for the game itself. Which in light of previous comments in the thread, would probably make it an "earlier" version. They later tried to combine all three parts on one tape, and didn't realise the second program would overwrite bits of the first, causing at least one of the bugs I found.

I didn't know the earlier version came in two tapes. I'm really curious to see this version and if you don't mind to provide shots, I'll be happy to complete my article about DoD on the blog.

I was able to repair the Pyramid tape, but in the process of trying to transfer it, I've found that some of the tape surface is damaged right in the middle of the entire spool (so 99% sure it was already there and nothing done by me), so it won't load without error. Not sure whether the game is salvageable or not sadly.
Hopefully I will have more fortune with Quest...
