No worries - I'll keep it for parts. Anyway, I was thinking of getting the "C64TPC (Connect Commodore 64 to PC)" item I've seen up on E-bay and of course the Mega Cart for my VIC-20. Only regret is that I can't use my my new Realms of Quest diskette software, but selling my other old Commodore titles could feed my aforementioned hardware purchases. :)

Serves me right for not testing my 1541 before purchasing media for it!

I'd rather not mess with it much further without knowing the root cause. Someone had clearly opened the unit before and a couple of screws were close to being stripped. I wonder how much I'd get for it on auction with the disclaimer that it gives the error in this thread...

The 1540/41 are a must if you want the true retro look. But if you don't care about that aspect, and want to purchase another "real" 5.25" drive then buy a 1541-II or a 1571....they are much less likely to have alignment problems.

Here's another idea. Have you tried initializing the drive?

Robert, I did go through that process (typing in about 4 lines of commands, right?) -- but good idea, I'll try once more now that I've opened and cleaned her.

Sadly, I tried different media and swapped out the VIC-20 for my C64 and all I get is the rattle (near the end of the video) - even after running the initialization on both systems. Even used the new Realms of Quest media for the VIC-20 test so I'm confident it's not a media issue.

Oh-oh, I'm out of options for you. You'd have to turn it in to a professional technician for repair.

Thanks for the ideas tips anyway guys. I hope to get a working 1541, but if I can find a 1541-II or something else out there I may just sell this as-is to see what I can get for it (investment into a working replacement). I have no attachment to this particular drive, so I won't spend more than it would cost to get a working one off e-bay.

Why go the eBay route? Our club has 1541-IIs for sale. :)

Well there you go! Ha -- maybe someone with repair skills will give me "trade in credit" for my 1541. :)
