I saw that one coming long before I pressed "Submit"...

Uninstall it, then install Windows XP?
Then after a month or two of degradation and using lackluster software, uninstall crusty ol' XP and then install shiny new Linux.

Even MORE low-hanging fruit! :P

Ha, it had to be said! My main reasons for not switching over are: Photoshop, DVD-ripping software, and an unsatisfactory version of VICE.

Considered virtualization?
In the end it will be as if nothing ever happened.

Except for that Vista already IS snappier than Ubuntu, and that was before most of those tweaks and with just 2GB of memory...

My brother. He says it runs much smoother than Vista on an older computer.

I'm running 7 but not the release yet. I can't comment on snappiness since my computer is no slouch. Windows 7 runs great in 8GB of RAM :)

Kiddies use Ubuntu; engineers use Red Hat; and hard-core nerds use Gentoo and Slackware.

All "personal" Windows OSes operate better for the end user maintaining it using virtualization; obviously not for 3D games, but that is what (sorted) PS3, Wii, Xbox 360 consoles are for.

And people who really know computers can use any operating system or even computers without an operating system.

What operating system people use does not equate to their knowledge of computing.

That's a bit narrow... more broadly stated is what operating system people limit themselves to equates to the limit of that person's knowledge of computing.
