The Improbable War
A game for the Unexpanded Vic 20, keyboard controlled. All BASIC.
The Improbable War is a retro-futuristic, turn-based strategy game. Your objective is to defend your fortress from the invading army.
Here is a PDF of the Complete instructions.
Abridged Instructions:
The player-controlled Blue army is in formation at the bottom of the battle field protecting the fortress. The army is composed of a random selection of the three tank types: Fire tanks, Earth tanks, and Water tanks.
The enemy Red Army also has such tanks, but because of the differences in their technological development it is not possible to identify the class of unit until you are engaged in battle.
Objective:
The Blue Army can win only by defeating all invading war machines. The invading Red Army can win by reaching the Fortress or destroying all Blue units..
Controls:
Select a skill level at the beginning of the game.
1 is easy. 4 is the most difficult.
Use the joystick fire button to select a tank. Tanks can move one lateral space in any direction per turn. Each side must move a tank every turn.
Fire defeats Earth
Earth defeats Water
Water defeats Fire
Equally matched forces are both destroyed

I have several ideas for changes in this game, so let me know what you think of it as it is. One or two players didn't get the strategy part of the game at first play. I'm thinking of adding elements.

Thanks Jeff, it's the game in Denial Collection 3 I love the most. BTW - Retro-futuristic is the adjective I was looking for to describe how a VIC-20 setup looked like in the early eighties .

I didn't have any problems understanding this one, it's like rock/paper/scissors in Stratego form. Naturally you can get a little shafted if the distribution of tanks is lop sided on one element, but you use those as fodder to discover what the enemy tanks are. And technically you've got a 2/3 chance of "winning" (eliminating the enemy tank) in the bargain...
Lie with passion and be forever damned...

... I wonder if this game will get professionally hacked with a scrolling intro, fast-loader, and trainer (Unlimited lives, Enemy throws daisies, etc.)
Love the PDF instructions and the retro picture pointed to by orion70.
P.S., anyone have a PDF viewer for VIC?

Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced.

A great game. I quite like it.
Retro-futuristic, however, is what I think of when for instance you begin playing Omega Race "In the year 2003"
I wonder if any particular strategies can be developed for the game. It is so far merely a question of force of numbers.

There are only three kinds of people in the world: those who can count and those who can't.

It's very nice. A bit like my "Superjakten":

I want that TV in orion's pic! I am currently getting into retro TVs. I want to retrofit one with a digital tuner and use it as my main tv.
This game got the most yawns and head-scratches. So I posted it to see what others think. It seems to have too many random elements for a strategy game. I've always been able to win, no matter how unfortunate the distribution is. Any strategy must include some initial guessing and a bit of memorization.
My strategy involves putting the army in a fixed position that allows the enemy to just destroy themselves.

If you want them, look at the html source, look for the .prg files and paste any of them after "http://user.tninet.se/~jad615g/viconline/" in the address field.. For example: http://user.tninet.se/~jad615g/viconline/osquar.prg ... The memory configuration is stated to the left of the prg name...Mayhem wrote:You do realise I don't have a bunch of those games in GB20 now Boray...
