Wishful Thinking

Post by GreyGhost »

Was just wondering if anyone else had this idea pop up. Combining all of the cart projects into 1 super cart. You know the game and utility selection of Megacart, reset switch, full expansion capability, switchable bank RAM, SD card reader, SID chip, maybe even an Eprom slot and (add your ideas here).

I know I know, wishful thinking. Its late and the mind starts to wander.

Is it possible to use megacart and the ultimate expander cart in a Hesscard 20 at the same time?

With Final Expansion you have nearly all things on your list:

+ the game and utility selection of Megacart

you can simply configure this yourself

it would be possible to port MegaCart firmware so FE3 look like it

+ reset switch

FE3 has two reset switch

+ full expansion capability

yes

+ switchable bank RAM

yes

+ SD card reader

yes

+ SID chip

no

+ maybe even an Eprom slot

you have 512KB flash on the FE3 and could write every Eprom to it

Agreed... the FC3 has just about everything that is needed. The only thing that I think could be added is perhaps an ethernet port. My cart project with the ethernet chip has floundered since summer 09 sadly.

Perhaps the FC4 will add a little more? :D

Perhaps a cartridge with a fully reprogrammable FPGA so you can make it act like a video chip, sound chip, network controller or just about anything?

I'll move this thread to Hardware, in case anything meaningful comes out of it.

You can now use C64 Ethernet carts (FB-Net, 64NIC, etc) on your VIC with brain's "MasC=uerade" converter:

There are no plans about a FE4.

Currently a device similar to FE3 is in progress for C-64. It is called EF-2 (EasyFlash-II) and planned by Skoe from Forum64.

Maybe sometimes I'll make a FE3 for 264 devices (Plus-4, C16, C116)

That would be quite a happy surprise for the guys at the Plus4 forum. :)

Perhaps Jim Brain can make an adapter to use C64 cartridges on the Plus4.... ;-) I'm rapidly becoming a JB fan!

Don't expect too much from this adapter.

The Adapter is a good idea, but it only connects wires of same meaning.

Only simple hardware can work on a different system. And normally software doesn't run. So maybe some piece of hardware could use it, if someone chnages the firmware for it.

Usually development is a bit of a chicken and egg problem. As long as there is no hardware to develop for, software developers do something different. As long as there is no software support, hardware developers see no reason to implement the hardware. Schema mentioned the MasC=uerade will work with some C64 Ethernet cartridges, which means those who already made TCP/IP routines on the C64 are within reach to make them work on the VIC-20 too. Once such routines are made, other application programmers may utilize them.

This sounds a lot like a MegaCart with menu driven SD Card reader capability.
Maybe this already exits
