uIEC/SD for Morons

Post by English Invader »

I finally have a uIEC/SD, a 2GB SD card and an SD card reader. I have successfully managed to transfer the new version of Quikman 8K from my hard drive onto an SD card. I have also connected the uIEC/SD to the both the tape port and the IEC cable on the VIC.

The green and red power lights come on so the hardware must be working okay. On the VIC screen, I typed "LOAD"*", 10", "LOAD"QUIKMAN", 10" and "LOAD"QUIKMAN8K", 10" and, in all three cases, the VIC was unable to find the file.

What am I doing wrong?

First, do a LOAD"$",10

Maybe all questions are finished after

---

Maybe it is a problem of FAT charset or a problem of uppercase/lowercase.

---

Best is, to use D64 image files. Cause µIEC does nearly the same as a 1541 floppy

I've just tried the LOAD command with "$" and switched the text into lower case mode. When I typed LIST, the VIC came up with "VIC 20", which is the name of the Windows folder I put the game in.

How do I open the folder on the VIC?

OPEN 1,10,15,"CD:VIC 20"

If you have a DOS wedge, i.e. JiffyDOS or EasyLoad as featured on the Mega-Cart, you can use @ to send commands to the drive.

Another thing to remember is don't forget the ",1" where appropriate. Nevermind if it's not necessary for Quikman ;-).

Using Mega-Cart with a uIEC/SD, I do the following:

Code: Select all

TURBO OFF:REM Press F5 to toggle
#10
@"CD:VIC"
LOAD "QUIKMAN+8K.PRG",10
RUN

Just tried this and the file seems to load into the VIC okay, but when I type RUN it says "?SYNTAX ERROR IN 55570". I tried running the game with EasyLoad in both 8K mode and fully expanded mode.

What am I doing wrong?

maybe a bad memory configuration and this cause a bad load address

If you have over 11,000 bytes free at startup, and it sounds like you do, then it definitely sounds like a bad image copy to me on the SD. Try making another folder and copy the PRG into the new folder. Make certain you have Safely Remove the hardware before removing the SD from the PC, too.

As a side note, last Saturday I hooked up my VIC-20 with Mega-Cart and uIEC/SD to load that Avril B&W demo. It used to work a few days earlier, but no matter how I tried the VIC returned ?SYNTAX ERROR when trying to run the second program in the load sequence.

Perhaps there are some kind of universal gremlins hanging around me and EI? I will try it again some day, perhaps transfer the D64 file again.

Got there in the end :) . Thanks very much for your help.

One more dumb question. Is it advisable to remove an SD card while the VIC is still on or should you turn the VIC off first?

You can hot swap SD cards while the unit (and VIC) is on.

But, make sure you are running 0.8.2 of the firmware. Ingo did find a serious FS bug in earlier versions that will corrupt data (it bit our own Jeff and his project, I think) It will zero out part of the FAT table, which will cause lossage.

Upgrade to 0.8.2 as per instructions on the Wiki or the Google Group if you are running an earlier version.

Hi Jim, I've your uIEC v3 with daughterboard.

What can I do with the 3 switch/button on it ?

PS: Which is the command to return on the root of the SD-card ? "CD//" ? is it the same for both the uIEC/SD2IEC right ?
Mega-Cart: the cartridge you plug in once and for all.

Read up on the "swaplist" functionality. SW1 is FWD, SW2 is BACK, SW3 is not defined as yet.

cd// is the command for both. CMD compatibility.

Thank you,

Just to be sure, the new firmware file to download for your uIEC3 is:
sd2iec-0.8.3-uIEC3-m1281.zip right ?

Sorry for the lame question but I don't find this specific info on the firmware wiki...

A last question, how to know the installed firmware version ?
Mega-Cart: the cartridge you plug in once and for all.
