Commodore vic-1541 Help

Post by fsporsche »

I just ordered one on ebay. Got it in the mail connected it to my vic-20 and powered it on. I Put a floppy disk in and when i did the (load"*",8 ,1) command nothing happens....The drive does not show the light that it is reading the floppy....it just stays in the searching command with nothing accessing from the vic-1541 drive.....Is there anything i can do? maybe the drive number has been changed? please help..... Crying or Very sad

Is there anything on the disk? Are you able to read a directory? Is the disk formatted?
maybe the drive number has been changed?
Did you attempt to ascertain this by addressing a different device number?
In the end it will be as if nothing ever happened.

hi there it sounds like it could be either the right 6522 or the 74ls06
on the vic 20

either that or you have a problem with the logic pcb in the 1541
also check your cable try another one if you have one
I'll take my cart to go thank you ;)

The vic-1541 drive does not even make a sound or the red light comes on. It just stays on the search mode and the drive does nothing. Now i have another vic-1541 drive and that one works fine....So its not the cable, or the vic-20..it must be the 1451 drive....Please help me narrow it down

As gklinger said, have you tried different device numbers?

I got a drive once that been internally modified to be device 11.

I second this with the addition that it is more likely that you have to replace the 7406 and/or the 74LS14 in the 1541. You find them top/left on the board, near the IEC-connectors.
