Conversion of Nuclear Power Plant simulator from PET (+24K)

Post by orion70 »

Hi there,

Once more, I had fun with the 40 columns VIC software FAT-40, converting an old classic of simulation from PET to VIC.
I removed all "wrong" pokes, waiting routines and REMs, but unfortunately the simulator and FAT-40 together still require a 24K RAM expansion.
See if you can crunch and/or single-file it.

The game itself is quite simple (only four variables to input), but it's a fun and complex enough simulation.
I hope a VIC-20 Nuclear Plant sim was never published before; if it was, just try this and have fun  .
Please, point out any bug.

Basing on the on-screen instrucions and the plant schematics, I also created a short instructions manual (2 pages, pdf).

Download the game HERE and play it as you did with the Island of Secrets, on a 24K RAM VIC:

LOAD"*",8
RUN
(40 column mode starts, then)
LOAD"NPP",8
RUN

Oh YEAH! PLEASE more PET game conversions! I'd love to see "Dungeon" and "Weather" converted!

(and thanks for keeping the screen green and black!)

Cheers :)

I assume the publisher and year to be taken from the PDF?

WOW! This is GREAT. Thanks Formater!

Yes, at least this is what was written in REM statements, and partly also on screen. It should be correct.

HERE is Weather. It was easy to convert it for a plain 22 columns VIC, as it's all text. I kept the green-on-black screen though. Have fun, and please report if the computer does the right forecast  .
NOTE: for 8K expanded VIC.

I'm working on Dungeon now, but it seems to be more difficult (lots of "wrong" pokes). Anyone can point me to a PET manual with the pokes explained?

I dunno about manuals, but you have some memory maps on Zimmers:
http://www.zimmers.net/anonftp/pub/cbm/maps/index.html

At home I also have a cross-reference memory map that I could look into to see which POKEs can be derived from it.

Oh, that was fast -- but this is not the game I was talking about.
I got it mixed up with "Ouranos" or "Weather War". The binary is called "weather.prg" so that is where I got confused. You can see a picture here:

http://www.commodore.ca/gallery/Commodo ... _shots.htm

Binary available here:
http://www.zimmers.net/anonftp/pub/cbm/ ... eather.prg

A very cool and different type of game.

Here is a great resource:

OK- now I got it (I was wondering why the heck you were looking for weather forecast made by a 1980s computer  ).
Thank you for the links, I'll make good use of them.

I'll post more games as soon as possible :D .

There are lots of great links to disk images of PET games on the internet (some in complete D64 archives). The PET had some very unique games which would really make a great addition to the VIC-20 library. I think it's awesome what you are doing (I've always wanted to do this but at my programming skill level, it would have taken years).

Some other great PET games:

Wizard's Castle
Android NIM
Space Invaders
Miner / Gold Rush
Tank

and so many more!

Some are demonstrated here:
