2009 Denial Award discussion

Post by Jeff-20 »

I propose Denial Awards! There could be many categories:

Best New Vic 20 Game of 2008 - (there were at least 17 games released)

Most Innovative Program / Software / Demo of 2008

Best Hardware Development

Denial Member of the Year

Denial Rookie Member of the Year - lots of newbies made good contributions!

Best Vic 20 News Story of 2008

Best Denial Forum Thread of 2008

Worst Denial Forum Thread of 2008 :P

Best Denial Wiki Article

Best Overall Vic 20 Achievement

etc.

What do you think? It could be a lot of fun. We'll have nominations. A private vote and maybe honorable mentions.

Nice idea. Hope that people won't take the awards too seriously :P .

Someone definitely has to come up with a catchy nickname (as in "Oscar) for the award, and a little graphic representing the award a winner could put in his/her avatar or signature (all in fun, of course).

Let's see:

a "Jeffy" / Geoffrey?
Viccy
Victoria
Vixen
RAMbler
The "Shatner"
a "Tramiel"
a "Butterfield"
simply a "Denial"
hmmm.....

I'm not keen on this idea because 2008 is long gone and because these types of things tend to be divisive.
In the end it will be as if nothing ever happened.

For award names, how about (a) the Homer (b) the Gilligan (c) the Goober?

I thought it would be fun. Bring us together if we approach it with levity. Almost anything can be divisive if we let it. But I will defer to the group opinion. I don't think things like best game would cause sore losers. (and the best/worst thread thing is just a joke). 2008 was only a little over a month ago!

I actually thought about suggesting this a couple of weeks ago but was unsure how such an idea would be taken from a 'noob'! So, therefore, I think this is a great idea!

Maybe each category could be a poll then it would be easier to collate the numbers and the results stickied for posterity. As for the avatar/title idea would be great - it could be a golden animated. spinning '=D' (a la the Mega-Cart logo) with a title per category...

As for a name for the awards, how about something simple like the 'Vickies'?

It can become an annual tradition! I think it could inspire more software and hardware projects.

I can start a WIKI page or something where we can decide the categories and add nominations. Here are the awards I have so far (I have seven, seems like there should be eight  ). Please make new suggestions. I can just edit this post.

Best New Vic 20 Game of 2008

Most Innovative Program / Software / Demo of 2008

Best Hardware Development of 2008

Denial Rookie Member of the Year

Personally, I think that the Most Innovative Program / Software / Demo of 2008 category should be split into 3. Although 9 awards is maybe getting a bit big - and you might feel the need to round it up to 10 categories!

If you wanted to round up the number maybe you should have the Best Scot With An Italian Name 2008 slot! :P

Hardly, I didn't do anything in 2008. Blue Star, Parachute, Evil Castle and Victoria are sure nominees for best game (a hard choice!). Ral-clan did a LOT for the WIKI and gets my nod for likely member of the year. MegaCart was one of the biggest stories of the year but may not qualify for hardware development of the year because its release will be 2009. The reason I lumped demos and programs is because there may not be enough from 2008 (I would think the mod of Fort Knox qualifies as innovative! as well as the children games).

I could go on, but I think such recognition is good for us! The year in review is quite fun. If we can agree on the categories, I'd like to start listing nominees.
