perhaps I should try jumpering it? change the loading address? it already doesn't work so I can't see much harm in it...

Is the ROM chip socketed? In worst case, the circuit board may be reusable if the ROM itself has gone bad. It depends a little if all "fingers" on the connector still are present or only those required for the game remain.
No it's not socketed but I did confirm the jumper is to change the BLK address from $A000 to $6000 so that probably wont help anything.
It's too bad but I guess I could unseat the chip and put in sockets for later experimentation...
