The VIC-20 flash drive conundrum

Post by ArugulaZ »

I used the search function and couldn't get a straight answer from it, so I might as well ask here... has anyone developed a peripheral for the VIC-20 that would allow it to save content to an SD or Compact Flash card? I'm asking because I've got 20+ year old VIC games I designed which I'd like to back up to a more permanent/emulator friendly storage device. The ability to save them as PRG files and play the games on MAME or VICE would be a HUGE plus.

You can use a 1541 Ultimate in external mode or, more ideally something like the uIEC. It's quite affordable ($50 or $75 depending on the model you choose).
In the end it will be as if nothing ever happened.

A third one is the MMC2IEC, if it still exists?

It does. There's also the SD2IEC and the 1541-III. I was cutting corners. :)

Considering the technical information available to me, I believe it would be possible to plug the 1541Ultimate directly into the cartridge port of the VIC-20, if only to provide it with power.
Be normal.
