Recommend a good power supply for use on C64 and Vic?

Hi.
I need a new power supply for my c64.
The old one is an older brick type with the minimal cooling fins
on the sides.

Input: 117v 50/60 Hz 46W
Output: 5VDC 8.5W 9VAC 9VA

It has a 4 pin din connector.

I would like recommendations for a replacement.
Can you give me the model number?
Does it matter if the replacement has a 7pin din?
Can it be used on a Vic?

Why do you need a new one? I use the same one for year WO any problem.

Don't know for sure. Maybe the fuse went out.

No. It's sealed in there pretty good. It's not the "repairable" type.
I contacted someone near me who says he can supply one for a few bucks.

If the Commodore supplies are similar to the Atari 'bricks', which i believe is the case, then you are correct. They are not reapairable. Over time, the electrolytics in the power supply dry out and no longer hold their charge...they become leaky. When measured with a multi-meter, the supply voltage may look OK. But when under load, the voltage drops. It becomes a DC voltage with a VERY lot of AC ripple. This is what happened with my XEGS power supply. I didn't suspect the power supply until I put a CRO on the input voltage while it was powering the machine.

Normally, when this occurs, you could just replace the electrolytic capacitors with new ones, and "Bob's yer Uncle". But when the power supply is potted with epoxy..."Yer up the creek without a paddle!"

What are the newer ones, more like the Amiga power supplies, like?

Certainly.

The opposite is generally not true as most VIC CRs PSU are only rated for 2 or 3 VA on the 9Vac. When it fails, it can destroy your C64.

That is good to know, thank you. My VIC-20s are of the older model, however, otherwise I could have a bit less clutter under my desk since I remove the Commodore 64 when I want to use the VIC-20 and vice versa, so I could have used the same power supply if I had had a VIC-20CR.

Eslapion is right, except the difference is not on the 9V line but the 5V line if I recall correctly. An old VIC-20 style power supply is rated 9V 1A + 5V 1.5A while a newer C64 style power supply tends to be rated 9V 1A + 5V 1.6A or even 5V 1.7A in the C64C. Exactly how much difference those 0.2A make, I can't tell but obviously it is a poor idea to stress test it.

I have never seen a VIC-20 power supply (one that actually came with the VIC-20 when sold) that has a rating of more than 2VA on the 9VAC, EXCEPT those for 2 prong VICs.

That's 2VA/9V=0.222 A or 222mA.

The first power supply most definitely was sold with VIC-20CR over here, and also featured with the first C64 breadboxes. There was a later variation which was rated 1.6A on the 5V. The last one certainly comes from a C64C however, to illustrate the difference.

The top two power supplies, I have never seen in north america.

The same seller has an old-style Commodore 64 power supply which indeed says C64 on it, but otherwise has the same "form factor" as the two-prong early VIC one:

Power supply part no. 1001038-02 that was provided with VIC-1001 and early VIC-20s (generally with PET style keyboards) was rated for 11Vac so I guess it can also run at 10Vac.
