New Game - "Parachute"

Post by Victragic »

Hi all,

for the Vic-20 plus 8K... 'Game & Watch Parachute'.

http://www.adam.com.au/grichards/parachute.d64

-----------
Controls:

Z left
M Right

F1 - Start Game A
F3 - Start Game B

F5 - Black and White (if you don't like the colour clash..)
F7 - Colour

Thanks to Ral-Clan for the tunes (originally for another game which.. err.. is not dead, just resting..)

Apologies it's not 100% accurate to the original, but hope you enjoy this nevertheless..

This is an excellent implementation! Really nice!, well done!

I've posted over the news to Old School Gaming, so it should eventually get a review written up.

Do you know that the Vic 20 has had more proper game releases this year than the C64? :)

As with Frogger '07, your games match or exceed in quality the best released for the VIC back in the 80s! :D

Hey Victragic, very nice conversion, i like it very much, many compliments !!!

Nice tune too, good work Ral-Clan.

Great idea to simulate an old Game & Watch games.

Is this conversion the first of a long series ?

Do you need inspirations ?
take a look to this site.

Thanks-

I'm hoping to do a few in a series, over time.. this is a port of the Gameboy 'Game&Watch Gallery' version - now I've done one, it should be really easy to do others. Or I guess I could make completely original ones.. anyone want to design an LCD game? Anyone? :D

Very cool! I loved this game as a kid. And this is an amazing conversion!

Good to see we're keeping up the new game per month schedule, too...

Back "in the day", a friend and myself would come up with game & watch concepts, It was our dream to implement the ideas on an unexpanded vic and send them to nintendo to make our fortunes! - Unfortunately, neither of us at the time had the programming skills to make it happen. After reading the included readme.txt, I thought, how about a challenge - convert your favourite game & watch to unexpanded vic using petscii characters. Surely this must be possible.

Freaky. You actually captured the feel of a G&W. That's impressive.

Excellent suggestion.
In the end it will be as if nothing ever happened.

Well it's already been added to GB20 ;)

Definitely an excellent version... I guess it makes it easier being one of the pure left/right games unlike some of the later ones.

Here's an idea though... given the "widescreen" aspect of the Vic20 display, I wonder if you could put that to use with some of the double screen titles such as Cement Factory?

I started with 'Mario Bros' as per my avatar, however my approach was to use 8x8 character-based graphics, not bitmapped - which looked great but unfortunately I ended up running *just* short on graphics memory.. in the end, I decided to begin with Parachute as an earlier, simple example, and now that I have a 'platform' can look at more complex ones.

I think the versatility of the VIC display means that both horizontal and vertical games should work quite nicely..

Thanks to DoC for updating the 'Games of 2008' entry too.. I think we have a very diverse range of games this year..

I'm sorry to say, but I think I found the first BUG with it. :(

When the game starts, the position of the player in the game doesn't match the position of the player on the display. As such, until you move, it's possible for you to catch a guy in the wrong place, and drop a guy in the right place.

Can anyone else confirm this bug?
