New release : RETURN TO FORT KNOX

Post by nippur72 »

I've finally released my hacked version of Raid on fort knox which I called "Return To Fort Knox".

Features:
  • * 8 new mazes
    * up to 15 guards (hard as hell)
    * a freezing ray given to player (C= key or fire)
Download it from: http://xoomer.alice.it/aporcino/Vic20/rofk.htm

Now let's see who's the first to finish all the levels! (Cheating is not allowed)

I had the pleasure to play it for many times from the MegaCart in the last months.
I like all your new features and levels.
I need to admit that is really difficult, i never finished it.
It is a very longevous game....

Many compliments Nino.

Oh my! Now I MUST get a MegaCart. That sounds just wonderful!

I've been a big fan of a game called Herzog Zwei (Sega MD). I've always wanted to edit the maps to make the game new again (less predictable). There's now a tile editor, but there's still no way to change the playfield. Such projects are wonderful to the retro community. Thank you!

Excellent work Nippur, I enjoyed the original ROFK back in the day, and I'm afraid I will spend the nights playing with this challenging sequel...

Great work! The freezing ray makes it quite a different (and better) than the original game.

Who would have believed in 1981 that hobbyists would still produce new games for the VIC with such quality, 27 years later? Not many.

Awesome stuff! Great job disassembling the original -- in only a weekend!

I was curious to see how you compressed the mazes, so I had a quick flick through the source code. And now I'm more curious, as all I found was maze0. I'd be grateful if you shared your secrets!

oh well, since mazes are made of space or brick, they are simply compressed in bitplanes: maze zero is in bit zero of the maze area (512 bytes), maze 1 in bit one, and so on. The original game had the two mazes in two separate 512 bytes area, so I even saved some space. All the other elements in a maze (gold bars, guard starting position) are fixed.

One more curiosity about drawing the mazes: I designed them directly in VICE, with the normal Basic cursor moving routine (SPACE for space, and any letter-key for bricks). I had an IRQ routine that intercepted the F-KEYS, so I had F1 prev maze, F3 next maze, F5 load maze and F7 save.

'No panthers were hurt in the production of this game'...

great idea for a remake, well executed! ROFK was possibly my favourite cart for the Vic..

I'm a purist, so when I hear that someone beats it, I'll be asking them if they used the stun gun... hehe

Hold the phone, VicTragic! Where did that screen shot in your signature come from, anyway? I still have my Mario Bros. Game + Watch and if there's a VIC-20 version available, I'd love to know about it.

Ah, Jess, you have been away from the VIC scene for a bit. I think that game is "coming soon". Keep an eye on the New Release Thread stickied in the General Topics section.
