A Vic Wiki?
A Vic Wiki?
I just had a daydream about having a wiki installed to this site. Imagine all users being able to add/edit and expand on individual game titles and hardware. Very useful. Two problems: I don't yet know how to set up a wiki, and I don't know if members would be interested in the work involved in building it. Maybe it could be a casual thing. Just add info whenever you have the time...
Someone on Denial has already started that project. It's called WikiVIC. I sent him all the stuff I had for the CafeVIC project. I don't think anyone has contributed to it though (which is too bad). However, I strongly feel the Wiki method is the way to go for a VIC archive. Realistically, it would make sense for it to be attached to this site (since it seems to be the hub of VIC collectors on the WEB). Maybe the fellow who is doing WikiVIC would want to merge his work with this site.
If you do a search for WikiVIC on the DENIAL forums you will find more information.

This is the one?

I'd feel better about contributing to something attached to Denial, since I'm convinced of Jeff's dedication to the VIC; I know he's not going anywhere. Presumably it's all backed up regularly and thoroughly?

It's a great idea -
- with a Wiki an ultimate VIC resource could be set up, detailing things like programming techniques and secrets, specific details about each piece of hardware, history, shared *documented* libraries of useful routines and so on.. as long as it remained entirely VIC-related it would potentially be of enormous benefit.
It would be the perfect complement to Denial, as far as I'm concerned. Taking nothing away from those who may have already attempted to start these things, perhaps a friendly invitation to bring their project online with Denial and utilise their tech skills and obvious passion for the Vic?

I think it's a great idea. Generally these sorts of things need to be spearheaded by a single, highly motivated person. Once it is up and running people will make small additions and minor corrections but without a General, these sorts of projects tend to stall.
Say, shouldn't it be called a Viki?

In the end it will be as if nothing ever happened.
It doesn't seem like the existing wiki is much more than that one page. Maybe I am being selfish, but if the project is part of this site, it would be a cleaner, more reliable community. I just have no idea how to install a wiki. If I did, I don't think it would be too much work on any one person. Everyone could contribute at leisure.
Here's a start: http://openwiki.com/ow.asp?OpenWiki%2FInstallation
I'll have to ask Brad about it.

As I said above, a wiki based database is the best idea for a VIC-20 knowledge base. Both Ward's CD project and my Cafe-VIC were de-railed by the fact that all changes have to go through one person, and it's a massive project.
A WIKI allows anyone to edit it at any time, at their own liesure, without having to send everything through a central authority. With a WIKI there only need be a "guiding authority" who doesn't have to micro-manage every aspect and can let things develop and check in from time to time to remove vandalism, etc.

Remove vandalism? The inaccuracies are half the fun of Wikipedia!
So that future generations will know that the Vic was invented by Captain James T Kirk (who once played William Shatner), had 5 trilobites of memory, sold over 12 billion machines over a thirty year production run, and ran off a small turbine powered by a single candle.
Tongue.. in.. cheek.. still think it's a great idea for it to be open, not controlled.
