SID chip, please!

Post by ral-clan »

If anyone has a spare SID chip, I'd like to buy it (or trade for it) so I can make a SID chip expansion board for my VIC-20. Thanks.

I think you'd be better off posting on a C64 site like lemon64.com, though it's not often that you find people willing to part with their beloved SID's, especially to a heathen VIC owner ;)
You could also post on midibox.org/forum and prophet64-forum.com, as there's usually some going there, though usually not cheap.
If you're still stuck for one after christmas, let me know as I can probably source a few 6581's from a friend. I'm pretty interested to see what you're going to do in terms of an expansion. What will support it?

Hi, I guess not much software will support it. It will be just to have fun and experiment with. I'd love to be able to use it in a music software program, but I don't have the skill to program that sort of thing right now. I'll just be writing simple BASIC progams for it.

You may find it easier (and cheaper) to find a whole c64 on ebay.
Maybe one that that is incomplete (missing power supply) but has
been "tested, working" by the seller. Go for the older
style, as the newer c64c's did not have many socketed chips.

If going this route, I think it would be best to hold out for a
known working unit, as I have found many failed sid chips when
you could still buy the c64 at thrift stores.

Good luck!

Yeah....I'm thinking about those days (bout 5 years ago) when you could walk into a Thrift store and have your choice of five or six C64s, and maybe a 128. That seems to have totally dried up now.

Boy, there sure is a lot of stuff I passed up that I sure would like to have now!

I might be able to scavenge a few SID chips if you can't find them elsewhere.

That would be great as I haven't found any yet.

The Cincinnati Commodore Computer Club has loads of C64s for sale, ranging from $5 to $40 depending on condition.

I'd rather just buy the chips, as shipping on a whole C64 from the states is going to be expensive.

I will have to check with Yoyodyne. I think his design is for the 6581, which uses 12v and 5v while the 8580 uses 9v and 5v.

I actually have a bunch of VIC-20 cartridges, and other stuff. I will be getting a few more in a couple weeks, so I'll try to send you a partial list soon, and an expanded list when I receive the new cartridges.
