WarGames by Darryl Reynolds?

Post by justarb »

Back in the day I remember getting a text adventure called WarGames on cassette for my Vic 20. I have been looking for a *.tap (or other archive) but to no avail - I have searched Zimmer.net, TOSEC and everywhere else I can find that has Vic games, but the only mention of it that I can find is a picture of the cassette inlay on the Wayback machine.

This is the tape inlay as I remember it: https://web.archive.org/web/2017040504 ... esPost.jpg

And the inlay was found on Darryl Reynolds’ page on the Play It Again blog here: https://web.archive.org/web/2017010508 ... -reynolds/

Does anyone else remember this game, and would anyone have an archive of it so I can go back and play it again?

That look reminds me of a Thorn EMI label, perhaps they could not get licensing rights to WarGames and had recast the tile as Computer War?
See if this video jogs your memory of the game: https://youtu.be/YsRwPMOVkas?si=aBiqjAsVcj9f43LS&t=195

No, the WarGames I am looking for is a pure text adventure - it had a crappy verb/noun parser and was written in BASIC. From what I can determine they had to re-do the game (most likely rights-related) and it evolved into Thermo Nuclear War Games for C64 and other platforms, but I am only looking for the original BASIC game I remember playing and hacking.

After a little more digging, it seems that the version of WarGames I had was an early copy and was supposed to have been a tie in with the movie, but the deal fell through, so the game got changed into Thermonuclear War Games. I found a thread on Lemon64 where the author made a brief appearance: https://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic ... 59#p539859

So I will keep searching for the original version and will check out the Thermonuclear War Games version to compare.

Update:

I know I have a copy of WarGames in my storage shed somewhere, so I purchased a DC2N4-LC from Luigi Di Fraia so I could start dumping all my VIC 20 (and C64) tapes. The first batch of tapes I dumped happened to include a copy of WarGames, which turns out to be a six part game for the unexpanded Vic. So, yay! 8^) Unfortunately the first part of the game would not load properly, so, boo! 8^( As I find some spare time I will go back to my storage unit to search for more tapes, carts and disks until I find WarGames. (I didn’t move my stuff into storage, my brother did that for me while I was overseas and let’s just say his organisation method was sorely lacking… 8^/ )

One good thing about this hunt is that I found a lot of tapes of type-ins and my own software from back in the day. For some reason I seem to have been trying to create a tape menu system - I found at least three different approaches, all of which work to some degree. I also found some software I wrote for my parents’ business which was nice to revisit. 8^)
