DIN plug psu - plastic grenade?

Post by JonBrawn »

Wotcha!

When you get your hands on a "new" (to you) VIC you usually recap it, because the electrolytics deteriorate with age and can leak or pop. I am mildly concerned about the newer DIN plug power supplies, for the same reason. There are some fairly large (physically) capacitors in there that you cannot inspect or replace (unless you're willing to remove all of the potting gunk), and they, too, are 40 years old and might be in bad shape. If one of these fails catastrophically, could it cause enough pressure to fracture the power supply blob? I don't know - I've never heard of this happening - but it is something that I thought about when I acquired my current VIC, so that power supply is in a box in a corner somewhere, and I'm running the VIC from a 2A USB charger.

LOL! Your Vic is a weapon!

I still use my CR DIN power supply's with my Vics but know this is not a great idea. I do think I am an outlier in this respect. From what I have read many people use newer power supplies. I still use the cassette a lot so I would need the 5 and 9 V supplies. Not to take over the thread, but any suggestions for power supplies?

You need to find Ray Carlson (search Denial).

There a couple of other good PSU manufacturers that sell on E Bay too. This one from Electroware that I use on my C64, for example. Just search for “Commodore 64 PSU”.

I've had a DIN power supply from Keelog for about two years. It's been great and I'll probably pick up a spare pretty soon. If I had any complaints... the cable could be longer.
