I was one of the beta testers - pretty slick enhancement. This is the first new product for the VIC in years, so check it out.

Do you know if any of the quirks you noted when testing got sorted out?

Wow, there is even a Swedish keyboard version!!!

Does it contain a fix for the tape bug as well?
( http://sleepingelephant.com/ipw-web/bul ... .php?t=876 )

If not then please tell them about that and there will be another reason for myself and others to buy it as well.

Looks quite interesting.

One question I could not clear up reading the web site:
If I install a JiffyDOS ROM into a disk drive, can I use this drive with non-JiffyDOS Commodores or has it to be both or none?

As far as I know, JiffyDOS has no tape routines at all (space used by speeder routines etc), so if you want to use a tape recorder, you have to switch back to original Kernel.

Maurice fixed a few of them, the others he said were really the fault of the other cartridges/programs and there was nothing he could do about them.

There is also a switch on the JiffyDOS ROM for the disk drive so you can switch it back to the original 1541 Kernal.

However, I have used a JiffyDOSed drive on a non-JiffyDOS 64 and it worked fine.

Will this work on an original Commodore VIC-1540 drive?
Duh, ingore the above statement. I see there is a 1540 drive chip available.

There's practically no difference between the 1540 and the 1541.

In fact, the only reason there's a different version for the 1541C, 1541-II, etc. is because the two ROMs were combined into one in those models. The JiffyDOS code is exactly the same for all drives, I believe.

Oh, that's a drawback. Thanks for letting me know. I don't think I will buy it then. The disk speed does not bother me much on the vic-20 anyway because the files are relatively small...

Besides the fast disk speed, the other major advantage is the built in DOS command wedge. I get very impatient with not being able to view a disk directory without losing the program in memory, and that advantage alone makes it worth the $20. I think I'll get a lot more use out of my real VIC as a result. For the relatively small amount of time I'd use the cassette, it's just a switch away, so that's no problem for me.

It's unfortunate that the cassette routines get dumped, but it seems to be the only logical thing to remove from the kernal to make space for new features. The same thing was done on the C64 DTV to implement the ROM-disk.

Can you flip the Kernel switch while running, or is it recommended to do this with the computer turned off?

I already have the dos wedge on Schema's cartridge
http://home.ica.net/~leifb/commodore/vic-cart/index.htm

Btw, Those interested in ordering JiffyDos should take a look inside their vic-20 first. Because not all vic-20s has socketed rom chips. Of my four, only two has.
