Do This After Re-capping Your VIC-20

Post by JonBrawn »

I don't know how widely this is known, but after I recapped my VIC-20CR I discovered that I had to hook my 'scope up to the video output and twiddle R10 to bring the video output back to being 1 volt peak to peak, as it was a long way below that value. (I'd leave the trimmer next to the crystal alone though).

What happens if you don't do this? I recapped a CR a few months ago, and it's mostly okay, but after a few hours the video goes to black-and-white. When I restart the VIC, it's okay again for another few hours.

Try popping the tin lid off of the video section. There's an adjustable resistor next to the VIC chip - turn it until you get a fairly bright display, but not glaringly bright, then sit and wait an hour (playing your favourite game) and see if that helps. If you're using the RF adapter to connect to the antenna input of a TV then the setting is much more critical - the RF adapter won't work if the output is too high.

This dramatically affected my luminance output, where it solidified the cyan border after replacing all capacitors and doing the S-Video modification.
