Ah, you're absolutely right! I had tried poking the I/O block and knew it didn't work, but somehow it didn't occur to me to check 37888. My mistake!

Just to follow on here, I'll try to introduce myself: In 1983 VIC-20 was my 2nd home computer (after a Sinclair ZX-81). A magic time, a computer with colors, sound, joystick, a fast machine ... but the isolation took its toll, no buddy with a VIC-20 around, everyone headed to the C64. Just spent 1 1/2 year with my VIC-20 but these were some of the most impressing times. But: recently I bought a VIC-20, entering again the VIC-20 club. :D
Anyway, my occupation heavily focused on C64 and Dragon 32 (don't laugh), but I try to snoop into the VIC-20 community, too. I'm mainly interested in programming with assembler, BASIC, Forth, playing around with them and developing tools, applications, drivers drifting to accessing hardware, disk utils, BASIC extensions and graphic stuff.
I'm collecting hardware only on occasion, just these parts I admired in old days. My goal is to preserve not only hardware, but information about this stuff too. Writing and cherishing articles in Wikis for various platforms is very important to me (mainly C64-Wiki.de/.com)

Back to the core theme: My nick here are just the initials of my full name, including some middle names nobody should really bother with ... not very exciting, I have to admit. Maybe interesting one might ask: My avatar picture goes back to my glorious C64 times back then. I found this picture on a advertising badge for a pharmacy product. Tried my first sketch with Koala Painter, printed on a color inkjet Canon 1210A with a hardcopy driver I wrote for the C64 and used it like a stamp to mark my disks, books and so on. :)

I've been using my handle for 15+ years. Bish came from "Bishop", the android in Aliens, and also the security specialist played by Robert Redford in "Sneakers". the 500 came about when I tried to create an account and "Bish" was already taken.

I'm a computer teacher at a high school in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. Before I taught, I was an audio-visual and computer technician.

When I was a teenager, I worked for two Commodore dealerships, and also ran a Commodore (PunterNet) BBS, written by Steve Punter in Mississauga.

Welcome Bish,

I live in Eastern Ontario now, but went to University in Peterborough in the early 1990s. I also lived in Brampton during my elementary/high-school years. It's probably not likely, but maybe we crossed paths. Where were the Commodore dealerships you ran? What was your BBS's name?

Thank you!

I worked at Richvale Telecommunications (RTC). Their parent company was in Richmond Hill, and they made all kinds of products, like the C-Link (an IEEE interface for the C64). After they went bankrupt, I worked for CVF Data Systems, until about 1987.

I ran PunterNet Node 80 - ''THE BBS', and also another PunterNet Node (I can't remember the Node#) DataLine.

Thanks! It's good to find like-minded people...especially those who are close by.

Now if I could just find myself a working VIC-20, I'd be all set. I think I'm up to 4 non-working ones.

That's amazing! If you ever get the urge to "Commodore" together, let me know!

Interesting, we had a longish discussion about the V-Link cartridge over here

That's a good thread. I don't really have anything else of value to contribute to it, but I do remember it. The V-Link seemed like it was cobbled together, while the C-Link seemed to be a professionally produced package. I kept the C-Links, because they were kind of cool little devices, would give V4 Basic if I wanted to use it with either an IEEE drive, or with a 1541. Both of mine still work.

My user name is something I came up with recently. I spent 13 years building and repairing computers for Systemax Computers. My current job is as an SQA (Software Quality Analyst) for a huge healthcare firm. I also spent two years studying digital photography. So Digital Steve it is. ;)

So I am restoring my old Vic and picked up a couple 1541's. I also bought a VIc Midi Cart recently plus about everything else they sell. Writing a little manual on how to set this puppy up. The info seems to be spread out across the forums.
