You know what. At least with this incident I have learned a few things.

1. Open source is really not my thing. Every hobby project from now on will be fully closed.

2. Making games for these obsolete platforms is not really worth it. The amount of positive vs. negative feedback is so wildly unbalanced that the many, many hours I spent working on the project were a waste of my time and energy.

Which is a real shame. I really enjoyed this game and would recommend it to anyone with a VIC. I'm sorry things have worked out like this...

Which I said, my examples are quite silly. Again, just as silly as someone thinking a c64 port of his vic-20 game hurting future sales on a totally different platform.
phvic wrote:As for the G+ thing: I am a very busy man and get a ton of all kinds of requests (you know, I happen to be one of the authors of a video game series that sold quite some copies).
Yes, because nobody else has job/life stresses in the day to day like you. :P

It does not matter. As the creator of the game I decide how my source code and game can be used however silly it may be in your opinion.

I think the hype surrounding this discussion has increased the downloads of the VIC20 version too. Shame you won't release a commercial version for the VIC20 with an optional expanded PRG with a character set. I'd support you, I am sure many others would love to get a tape version too.

I think you really need to be making them for yourself and for fun. Treat any acclamation received as a bonus.

i dont even see the point - he got a lot of positive feedback infact. the only thing he got negative feedback on was his ramblings about IP and copyright.
I'm just a Software Guy who has no Idea how the Hardware works. Don't listen to me.

Who got positive feedback? HF or me? I don't know.

You apparently don't have this control - the c64 port, two forks of the vic-20 code, and however many have downloaded the package from github seems to say otherwise.

To preserve my sanity I have asked the board admins to terminate my account on this forum. It was nice to be part of this community as long as it lasted but I can't take this anymore. Good bye folks!

Man, some crazy blown out of proportion bad energy going around here. Cleary mistakes were mades on both ends. Here's the timeline as I see it with errors made pointed out.

1. phvic release Demons of Dex for VIC-20, puts source code on Github (ERROR: Why put the source online for everyone to grab if against ports/code re-use by others)
2. Hokuto Force finds game and likes it
3. Hokuto Force contacts author on Google Plus (ERROR: Why not here on Denial in the original thread were the game originated and the author is posting?)
4. phvic answes on Google Plus "How may I help you?" (ERROR: If you reply and write this the other party may expect a response. If you don't check Google Plus regularly say something like: Oh, I am not on Google Plus often, please contact me by email/on Denial)
5. Hokotu Force replies by mentioning C64 port, but get's no response (ERROR: assuming a port is OK with the author since no reply received. ERROR: Not replying to this, explaining how you'd like to be credited.)
6. Game is released on CSDB and announced on Lemon (ERROR: The announcement post on Lemon does not mention the original VIC-20 game at all.
And here we go with a new game called Demons of Dex, done
by Digital Monastery the internal game label of Hokuto Force.
All the work was done by Qzerow and Snabel.... Happy dungeon crawling
Now this really is bad style. It makes it look like the game was done by Digitial Monastery and "all the work" by some other guys. It would have been easy to word it just a little different to make it ok, e.g.:

And here we go with a new game called Demons of Dex, ported and expanded from phvic's original VIC-20 game by Digital Monastery the internal game label of Hokuto Force. All the work on this expanded port was done by Qzerow and Snabel.... Happy dungeon crawling

While the game itself has original credits on the title screen "Original code: Petri" they are only in third place, not mentioning his full name or that the whole game was his idea. While phvic's credits are mentioned elsewhere like in the manual, they are not too easy to see. In my opionion phvic made a good offer in this post:

http://sleepingelephant.com/ipw-web/bul ... =15#p89333

Not too big a change I'd say.

BIGGEST ERROR: Getting angry/defensive about this issue. This is supposed to be fun. In real-life you'd sit down, have a beer and sort this thing out before the bottle is empty...

Edit: Clarified visibility of original credits

Accurate summary, but I would put ERROR #1 as the biggest error

I think that's a pretty good summation Tokra, and pretty much covers my thoughts in this whole thing.
