I did my share about that some time ago (see #38.)Kweepa wrote:[...]as has been said in the past, someone has to write something[...]
In my opinion however, Commodore Free suffers from mediocre copy-editing. While collecting information from different places on the 'net, Nigel doesn't seem to care to contact the original sources. I've often seen blatant errors being taken over into the magazine without any corrections.
For the current issue, my entry was supposed to be of a rule-bending variant: it shows, that a supposedly single-line program could actually fill the entire available RAM and thus the imposed restriction was not a restriction at all. Shaun and Nigel just didn't get it. I sent an e-mail explaining the facts to Shaun (which had been a copy of the original e-mail I sent to Nigel with the entry) one month ago, but this didn't help either - the draft of the results went into the magazine, unaltered.
If I were to contribute yet another article for Commodore Free, I would need to insist on them taking over only the material as I had sent, and not adding additional but probably wrong or unwanted 'extra' information.

Exactly! I felt like my entry was slammed for not following the instructions. It didn't seem like they understood the VIC (and its line limitations) at all. A one line game on the VIC felt like a miracle to me, but it was seemingly judged in comparison to full game programs.Mike wrote:For the current issue, my entry was supposed to be of a rule-bending variant: it shows, that a supposedly single-line program could actually fill the entire available RAM and thus the imposed restriction was not a restriction at all. My main source of updates on the Commodore world is Richard Lagendijk's Commodore News Page:

...or Commodore is Awesome, which puts together news from Richard's blog and other sources.
I think a blog, with tags, comments and everything is far better than a static, unchangeable web page or document.

cOMMODORE fREE
Hi
Yep points well noted,
Problem for most of my errors is time, and also I am not an editor; I said this at the start, but tried to create a Free magazine to cater for all. I realise this is difficult well impossible!,
I have posted on denial for info on the vic, I also posed on various plus4 websites, pet and Amiga sites this was several months ago and still recieved nothing, so I usually end up with having to write everything myself, and as you can see I am no writer I give it a go though..
If I have no vic stuff to print what should I do?
Points about the vic basic comeptition are noted and I personally think I should have gone with an online voting system for this, I made some comments to Jeff about his entry, Yes Jeff point taken, you have my offline comments about your entry.
The next issue of Commodore Free has a more Vic feel, not an after thought as jeff rightly pointed out, I usuakly have to scrat about for Vic items and try to include what I can
Anyway feel free to send anything you would like published, most of the news items are sent in to me, as is ....
Time isnt on my side for the issue, you would be surprised how many hours it takes to compile and create what you read! I have lost a number of helpers as they dont have the time!
Feel free to email me any comments suggestions or as most do just general hate emails,
Oh and for the record
yes I do love the Vic, I am not as one email suggested Anti-VIC it was my first home computer and its still set up (yes the same one) still works fine, and I still play games and generally dabble about on it .
sorry if I have upset anyone here, obviously this isnt the intention, help is always wanted even if you can only manage a single item of news it all helps, I want to promote commodore not create a negatave bed of ill feelings on any community, the denial forum is usually quite calm compared to some of the other Commodore forums
anyway Thanks for the comments feel free to email them directly or PM me,
Best wishes
Nigel

Commodore Free
Hi well you are welcome to co-edit the magazine with me !metalfoot76VIC wrote:Not to pile on Commodore Free and its ofttimes shoddy editing, but that's precisely why I stopped reading it a long time ago. Would there be a market for a nicely edited Commodore based PDF magazine? I think so. Especially if it were free...

Yep If i dont recieve anything I cant realy print it...Kweepa wrote:Well, there's the one-liners competition results...
And as has been said in the past, someone has to write something for it to make it to the magazine. Something like orion70's vic-report would be good...

Nigel,
regarding news for the VIC-20, just take a look at the newest postings in the Announcements section. There have been a quite a lot of interesting developments in the last few weeks. They're already there, literally on a silver platter. Those announcements are however usually quite short, and the discussions in the threads often focus on technical aspects, making the available text base harder to read in the context of a magazine article.
What's wrong about dropping the people a short PM, and asking nicely whether they'd be interested in writing an article for Commodore Free regarding their own work, which is hopefully easier to read and understand?
If they agree, I'd strongly recommend to you to take the submitted articles really as is. When there is some doubt which parts of the correspondence are supposed to be included in the magazine, and which ones are just intended for you for information purposes, please ask the people.
That actually had been some points of mildly annoyance for me, when I submitted my articles for issue #38: I found some parts of my e-mails disclosed, which I didn't want to be published; and you added 'extra', but in my eyes unnecessary information from threads here in Denial - my article was supposed to be self-contained, and in any case I think people are smart enough to look up that extra information in the forums by themselves.
What really worked out well at that time, was the interview template you sent me. It resulted in a full interview, which couldn't have been done much better even when your questions and my answers had been exchanged just one at a time (or even had been 'life', for what matters).
Quite some years ago, I co-edited a disk magazine for another platform, so I know about the problems acquiring articles from other people. Reading is easier than writing, that is granted, and many people who craft software (games, applications) or hardware are uncomfortable expressing their ideas in layman's terms. At least as long as they're not asked for it. It might just need that short PM to get them out of their hideout.
