Does what the auction says it does
You connect one end to the datasette, and the other ends to your PC (one goes to parallel port for data transfer, the other to a joystick port for 5V power). Then you can use PTAP and MTAP to transfer tape games to and from them.
Not really quite seen that style before. Usually it's a cable that connects to your serial port on your C64 setup into the PC and then you run the tape through the 1531 there using a program on the C64.

I'd say that it's not an X1531 but an X1530 cable... (More info here: http://sta.c64.org/x1531.html )
You use to connect a Commodore tape drive to your PC. Use it together with MTAP and PTAP to read and write programs from/to tape. Make .TAP-files and write them back.
It is easier than using the regular XE1541 for tape-handling as it doesn't need a C64 connected to the PC, just the tape drive.

P.S. Darn, Mayhem beat me to it...

Or failing that, send it to me to transfer!

Maybe the eBay cable was customized for use with a 1530/C2N which indeed connects to an edge connector rather than mini-DIN? I don't know which would be the easiest way to obtain a such connector. I guess one can etch a piece of circuit board as six stripes with 3.96 mm spacing.Mayhem wrote:1531 has a din plug type interface instead of the flat circuit board approach...
For fun, I looked up how much the female counterpart costs. On ELFA, DZM 6 HREH (6 pins, single sided, suitable for cassette) costs 96 SEK each incl. VAT. That is about $13. The DZM 6 DREH (12 pins, double sided, suitable for user port) is 188 SEK ($25) each.. I can see why vic_user was playing with cardboard and some metal stripes.
If nbla000 is eager, you may try the sound card method via a WAV file, as mentioned in another thread. If you find the right settings and software, it might work for you, although I'm sure a dedicated cable is more reliable and easier to work with in the long run.

But then it wouldn't be a X1531 cable, it would be a X1530
1530 = C2N aka C64 datasette
1531 = C16 datasette
You can get both.. but the X1530 cables I've seen generally only work in conjunction with being connected to a C64, as opposed to the X1531 cable which directly connect a 1531 datasette to a PC.
(unless I'm mistaken here... it's been a while since this auction was up!)

Hm. This site in German suggests a X1530 cable design which also involves an IEC connection. Not sure how common it is.
