Pirate's Cove, The Count, etc.

Post by franka78 »

Can someone please tell me how to get these games to work with the vice emulator? I downloaded the vice emulator, and the gamebase20 file. I can't get any of the text based games to work. Those are really the only ones I'm interested in. If anyone can tell me how to get them to work that would be great. It would be like going back in time. I used to play these on my brothers vic20 when I was 7 or 8 years old. Thanks!

Assuming you are booting the XVIC program, then you need to attach the first file to $4000, the second file to $6000, and then type SYS32592 to start the game.

That must have been a popular question back in the 80s. I've found the number etched into the back of the game carts, written in permanent marker, scribbled on the inside cover of many user guides, etc. :)

Later versions of the cartridge label have the SYS code printed right on it.

For example:

Why the heck didn't these autoboot?
I realise they don't attach to $A000, but why weren't they made that way?

My guess is that they were written by guy using 16K ram expansion and simply ported over to ROM.

They autostart from MegaCart menu

Andy Finkel converted all five of them, and got them down to 16k from 24k. I think there's some details about that online somewhere, but I imagine you're probably right.

Maybe because you should be able to use the computer for other things without having to remove the cartridge.

All Scott Adams games for the VIC-20 are compatible with the VOTRAX Type'N'Talk which may require the BLK5 area if you're not using the RS-232 configuration.
