C64 Mega Cart type cartridge?

Post by 16KVIC20 »

Hi, I've just acquired a C64 (for the first time). Does anybody know if there is a C64 equivalent of the MegaCart which we have for our beloved VIC?

There was in the past, in the sense of being a self-contained unit. Today the best solution would be something such as the uIEC/SD, SD2IEC or 1541 Ultimate. Essentially those all let you run a storage device such as an SD card containing game images on your C64.

Ok, thanks Mayhem. Now that is where I'm a bit strange. I'm fine with cartridges being all in one unit, but rapid loaders from SD cards and the like I tend to steer clear of. While I see all the advantages, there is so much software available I don't know which to use first! I tend to prefer tapes in that case, yes I know it's strange.

Thanks for helping anyway. :)

... for C64? Exclusively? That is strange to me, so what's the deal with that?

I have found the 1541 U2 is simply the best accessory for my C128D. Not a VIC Mega-Cart, but it had to address the huge C64 software library out there and some of its operational complexities.

As usual, I'll recommend the IDE64

http://news.ide64.org/

It has a bazillion features, but if you just want a big list of games, just throw them on a flash card and use the built-in file manager to pick one.

No not exclusively, I'm the same with my VIC and my spectrum. I had a DivIDE+, which is a similar device, and found the choice of software to be overwhelming. If I load by tape I find that I am more likely to stick to something for a bit.

I'll take a look at what you suggested. Thanks for your reply. :)

A megacart is simply a

+ ROM repository for games and utiliies
+ a configurable memory expansion

Memory expansion is not nessecary on a C-64 for most games and utils. So a normal cartridge is near to a "MegaCard for C64".

I found EasyFlash useful for my C64 to start many games directly from a cartridge.

And there is also a successor of EasyFlash called AlienFlash, which includes 16 x EasyFlash memory banks and USB connector and Action Replay support.

AlienFlash does not seem to be the direct successor to EasyFlash. There is EasyFlash 3, which is the successor to EasyFlash 2 (of which only a few were made), which is the successor to EasyFlash 1.

EasyFlash 3 has been discussed at Forum64.de and more info on the cart is at

Yes, you are right. But EF3 is not available currently and so it is no successor currently.

Alienflash is vailable and it works really great. I'm happy with this cartridge.

Maybe I'm happy with Easyflash 3 when it will be available ... :D

Dragos,

If you want an FE3 you can ask me via PM and then send the money paypal to me if you want.

Let me know if you need it built. I built a few for folks on here.
