You might try looking for a C64 power supply. The VIC is compatible with most C64 leads and peripherals. Ebay is probably your best bet.

However it would require the original poster to replace the connector inside his VIC-20. Besides the 9V 1A line might be a bit on the weak side for a two-prong VIC, although it has been proven before it can be powered that way without breaking down.

Of course the best option might be to look for a cheap and working VIC-20CR which has the DIN style power plug to start with.

I've just started using a second wave C64 lead on my VIC and it works okay.

On a so called two-prong VIC, the one with an usual looking power connector, not a round DIN? Did you make an adapter?

I haven't made any adaptions, and so far as I know, my VIC is standard apart from a German VC-20 in the top left corner. I didn't know of any deviations in power supply. I just plugged the C64 one in and it worked a treat.

The OP would be better advised to follow Carlsson's judgement in this matter. He's a lot more informed that I am.

Can you actually replace the 2 prong connector with the DIN without modifying the case? I assume the connector is soldered through the board... is the board the same in both models? just desolder the old one, and replace?

It looks like I will probably have to chase down a PN: 902502-02.. it looks like they are about $30-$40 shipped off of e-bay.. more than I paid for the whole system. (eBay # 110393345258 if you're interested.) It looks to be in good condition.

I'd love to find one in NOS condition... but that's probably too much to ask.

No. Someone else on this forum once hacked up a two-prong VIC and installed a DIN plug, only pulling the 9V AC line if I understand correctly.

Despite being rather small in size, those power supplies weigh quite a lot which raises the shipping costs. Even if someone had a huge surplus of power supplies to donate from, the shipping would be almost as much as a whole system. I might be able to source a loose 110V two-prong PSU but expensive overseas shipping clearly is out of the question.

Can you use any of the parts on a two-prong VIC on an ordinary VIC-20?

Sure. At least the 6502 CPU, 6560/61 VIC-I and 6522 VIAs are identical.

The early (two-prong) VIC-20 has 11 small 2114 RAM chips. 11*0.5K = total 5.5K.

The later (usually DIN powered) VIC-20CR has two bigger 6116's + three 2114 if I recall correctly. 2*2K + 3*0.5K = 5.5K.

The keyboard connector as well as external connectors are also the same, the fuse however is different.

Hello Richard -- :D

Just a quick note: If you can't (or haven't) found one yet, you may have to make one. See my posting in Denial:
Hardware and Tech. "Older 2 pin PSU" . . . .

I've managed to acquire three two-pin PSUs since this thread was started so they're not all that difficult to come by.
