Fixing a VIC-20

Post by Ihavenousername »

I finally got a VIC-20 and a Datacassette in the mail today, but it turns out it needs allot of fixing up before I can actually use it.

It's keyboard is missing two keys, and some that are there just aren't working at all. Some of the ports, like the one the Datacassette plugs into, are corroded and slightly damaged.
I've already found a replacement keyboard, but I wanted to know if anyone here had some tips about VIC repairs or the problem with the back ports. Or just any tips for the VIC in general.

I'd be inclined to cut my losses and look for another VIC. If you're careful, you can find a fully working one for about £20. Plus, you can keep the one you've got for spares -- at the very least, it's a working 6560/6561 VIC chip, which could be an absolute lifesaver one day.

I would just get a new one, but at the moment I don't have much money to spare for another VIC, even though their cheap.

Plus, I do need a project.

But if it comes to it, I probably will just get a new VIC.
