I wouldn't say they're rare. Uncommon is more accurate. I picked up a complete set (similar to the one on eBay) for $25 a few days ago. Unfortunately there was a video problem with the C16 so back it went. Too much hassle to deal with.

huh? here they are quite common, ive had 3 myself, 2 loose and one CIB.

They never caught on here. The VIC-20 and 64 were very successful and the C16 and Plus/4 struggled to find a market.

I seem to remember seeing one in a shop around the time they came out and thinking "that black C64 looks really cool!". I never found out that it was a completely different computer until a couple of decades later.
