I suspect it will go for an extremely unreasonable amount of money.gklinger wrote:I was just looking at that and trying to decide whether I should bid reasonably or put in a number that will make me feel sick to my stomach when I hit the 'pay now' button.
Hrm.
It has quickly gone past what I would have paid.
Mega-Cart: the ultimate cartridge for your Commodore Vic-20
It's only at $46.67 as I post this. I figure it will run up to the $400-$500 range. I suppose it's worth whatever the high bidder pays (at least to that person). I don't have a practical use (above and beyond the usual) for it myself. I could say that about a lot of the stuff I own.
In the end it will be as if nothing ever happened.

AFAIK, other than the keyboard with the japanese symbols, the only difference the VIC-1001 has with our beloved VIC-20 is the Character ROM.
With regards to early PET-style keyboard VICs, it uses the same power supply (same part no. ...) and has exactly the same mainboard.
Has the VIC-1001's character ROM ever been dumped?

So if you find a production resource for making new keycaps, you can make counterfeit VIC-1001:s!

Those early Famicom cartridges really remind me of early VIC-20 cartridges. Almost the same sort of "lightning bolt" graphic art on them as Commodore used.

I've converted my VIC-1541 with very long electronics board into a VIC-1540 by making a copy of the 1540's ROM. I also gave one to Victragic if my memory is correct.carlsson wrote:Yes, see here:

Although making copies of the VIC-1001's keyboard is impossible, perhaps some people would be interested in trying to convert an NTSC VIC into a VIC-1001. Apparently all it takes is changing the Kernal to 901486-02 and character ROM to 901460-02.
AFAIK, the VIC-1001 is NTSC only.

Brian I have ENOUGH of your personnal attacks.
This stupid behavior has been lasting for more than a year now and it must STOP.
I have done NOTHING to you to justify this.
Enough said.

I think it depends on your budget. Surely you should be able to find a manufacturer who can produce custom keycaps, but perhaps it costs $10000 or even $100000 in startup costs. While onto it, we could produce a set of Cyrillic keycaps too:eslapion wrote:Although making copies of the VIC-1001's keyboard is impossible
Yes, because Japan uses this video standard. While there may have been some exile Japanese in Australia, UK and other European countries, they were too few for Commodore to manufacture a computer for them.eslapion wrote:AFAIK, the VIC-1001 is NTSC only.
However the NTSC and PAL kernels are so much alike eachother, that it is not a problem to implement the VIC-1001 differences in a PAL kernel too. The character set is independent of the video mode.
