MR. PIVOT
A game for the Unexpanded Vic 20
A musical puzzle game. Plot a course by highlighting and rotating arrows. Find hidden notes or create a song. Joystick required.
It bothered me that there was only one game in our "new releases of 2008" thread, so I made a game last weekend. I considered the discussion on in-game instructions. Every level starts with an instruction screen. I hope it is easy to figure out.

It took me a while to get the hang of it but once I did I really got into it. Very nicely done. I'm curious about this made it last weekend business. How long did it take you? When did you come up with the idea? I always found coming up with good ideas harder than actually implementing them so I would like to know more about your process.
In the end it will be as if nothing ever happened.
I made it last weekend, but I thought the learning curve was too high. I didn't know how to make the instructions relate my idea of how one should play. I hope players outline a "loop" rather than try to change the arrow just-in-front-of the moving "chaser".
After only having one release in 2008, I was worried people might think the scene was drying up. So I just decided to post the game today. I hope people give it a few tries; it takes time to warm up to it.
Be nice. It's all BASIC. It might be similar to simple tape based games.

Mmm... fun! Can be randomly unfair (I had one level start with the chaser going straight into a green block!) and you need a good memory to remember where the notes are (maybe a key to hit to temp show where they are?). But I like it... vaguely reminds me of one of the sections in Electroplankton...

Not that it's a bad thing Jeff, just the first thought that came to mind when playing it. After all Electroplankton is merely a music creation device and this is a game...Jeff-20 wrote:I should send my games ideas through Mayhem before working on them. This is not the first time I've nearly cloned something.

I like it a lot, but I think setting the arrows should be done holding the fire button and then choose direction. I've only played it in VICE so far, but the most annoying thing about it is when the arrow skips one position too much or when I don't press fire long enough so nothing happens...

You're right. I thought the rotating control would add a bit of gameplay; it is possible to misdirect the chaser and have to replot a course to save it. Having complete control could make the game a little too easy. Maybe I will try to make a new version with your suggestion. I would have to take out something else because it would require extra memory.

You're absolutely right, it does add a bit of gameplay, leave it as it is, unless it's possible to speed it up or have an increase in speed while playing...
