Knob Mods

Post by Jeff-20 »

I've seen plenty of console and computer mods with analog knobs attached. Why? What are the knobs for?

Knobs are cool in a retro kind of way, I guess. Serisously though, I don't know about the second and third pictures but I'm quite sure I've seen the first one before. I think that computer was designed to be used as a SID-based synthesizer of sorts so I guess the knobs provide the operator the ability to tweak the sound. Analogue controls work best for that sort of thing.

Am I the only person who keeps thinking the Seinfeld episode with the great line, "Yes, separate knob. Why separate knob?! Why separate knob?!" :)
In the end it will be as if nothing ever happened.

the first unit pictured (64c) was modified for use with Prophet-64 software. the knobs are basically just paddle controllers built in and wired into the controller ports. the software can use paddle signals to control SID filter cutoff, resonance, etc.

not sure about all those knobs on the NES though, or the Atari 2600. something similar though, i'm guessing...

I've seen video/audio mods for old consoles that use them, Usually, it's for splitting the audio when using composite or something to that effect. There's a good link here[/url]

The Atari 2600 pictured seems to live in a studio, judging by the rack equipment around it and the effects pedal on top of it, and the cartridge inserted looks quite suspect. I think it's some Kevin Horton music project.
